Sounds to me like somone has downloaded backtrack!

I'd second that! During my networking diploma we had a student from a foundation degree course come in and give us a demonstration of Backtrack and the little time required to capture the required info and actually gain access to the network was astonishing.. he came was in in under 30 mins and it was even quicker on his second demonstration which was gaining access to wireless "protected" by WEP (128-bit)!

It proved to be quite interesting but at the same time quite worrying when you think how many people will still be using WEP security, especially those that have the original BT Home Hub as their default routers and routers alike!!

Hi All,

Still no further intrusions to my network so I think the change to a higher level encryption has worked.

To answer some questions in the posts;

I'm pretty sure that its not my neighbours with the kid as they were away last time I was hacked, and as the only places my router recorded them going to was a couple of google pages I think that was the hacker getting in and checking that they could get internet access, not a scripted event. My neighbours the other side are v elderly and I don't think even have a pc. I def can't see a wireless signal that i could relate to them.

I can see 3 external wifi signals, 2 of them pretty weak. The strongest is my neighbour I've already ruled out. When they were on my network and downloading they managed to reduce me to a bit over 2Mb of my 10Mb signal, would someone with a weak signal be able to take that much bandwidth? Or is it someone with a booster?

At the moment I've still not been hacked again so not gonna worry about it. Will monitor it though. Have called my ISP and told them too so they log it on my account in case I get some nasty lawyers letter from the music industry or someone.

Cool, so did you just get hacked the once (as in one day) or was it a recurring event until you upped the security measures?

The reason I ask is that if it was on a single occasion then maybe it was someone 'war-driving'; when people drive around in a vehicle piggy-backing on Wi-Fi signals. Having said that it is usually unprotected networks that they target, but maybe you just got a lucky opportunist!!

It was 2 occasions. First time I noticed I blocked their MAC address. A few days later they were back with a diff MAC address so I changed Encryption level. Not happened since then.

Wouldn't have thuoght that someone driving around would have bothered taking the time to sniff out my login? Takes a bit of time doesn't it?

BT home hubs, yes. I have had backtrack demonstrated to me and the demo was a crack of a BT homehub with standard settings... cracked in 2min 58 seconds!

Its not that widely know, its only really people who are intersted in linux or network security that are likely to stumble on it. However, there is a growing number of tutorials online.
