Recommend me a book about DNS

Probably the wrong section, but I'll get more hits here.

So, after starting a new job working for a hosting company, I am starting to see where my knowledge in networking lacks. So, I need to get knowledgeable on DNS, TCP/IP and Linux as soon as possible.

I understand the basics, and can practice Linux and virtualisation on my home PC, but for getting more understanding of DNS and maybe TCP/IP I would like to know if there's any decent books out there I can read whilst on my commute to London Bridge.

    Ta!

You'll struggle to go far wrong with the O'Reilly books, this one in particular.

Agree with the above - the O'Reilly technical books are generally excellent. The one Splash mentions is DNS and BIND, which is an open source DNS server forthe *nix platform. However, whether or not you are intending to use BIND (or any OS DNS server software, you will find the principles apply pretty much to any implementation.

Re: Recommend me a book about DNS

I'd recommend a Kindle as a good investment for technical books, so long as they aren't colour diagram heavy its a much more economic way of reading, also things like Safari books are quite useful. I read in the average year what would cost me about £2,500 in paper form. I do have a few books that are my bibles thou and always have in paper form.

For learning about TCP well it depends how much you really want to know, do you want to go down to the very low layers below ARP even?

Re: Recommend me a book about DNS

If you want to know how DNS works, wikipedia has more information that you will need.

If you want to know about the NIX DNS implementation (as splash has said) bind is the program. Personally the thing the configuration is ridiculously simple. So just copy an existing Zone file. The only "issue", is setting up master and slaves, which also is very simple, the only "tricky" bit, is turning off notifications for zone file changes from a slave server.

I think I'll grab this one for now, only £20 on Amazon.

Re: Recommend me a book about DNS

As has been said this tends to focus on BIND for the in depth stuff, but if you're working in hosting there's a pretty good chance it'll be the DNS of choice. Other than that... I really can't recommend the O'Reilly books highly enough for pretty much all your techy needs

As much as I would love one being a "techie", I wouldn't make use of it that much I think...

To be honest, I'm not sure. At the moment, I just want to start to learn what I can that would help me manage servers (both Linux and Windows based) in a data centre environment, including virtualisation (currently utilising Xen, but would not say no to learning VMware or Hyper-V).
