    Re: BT Infinity 40/10Mbps?!

You're right but from my experience they cope admirably with a 40mbit Infinity connection and are less laggy and less prone to dropouts that bedevil my wireless connection.

For point to point network transfers I get about the equivalent of around 100mbits.

    Re: BT Infinity 40/10Mbps?!

I've never looked at the powerline connectors before, don't know why but I always sorted of dismissed them as a gimmick.

I'll look into them, thank you. Do you generally get same speeds with them as you would wireless? Also do they hve to be plugged directly into a sockey or can they be plugged into a 4/6/8 way adaptor and still work?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm very much out of the loop on things these days.

General advice is to get a pass through adapter and plug them directly in to the wall socket for best results.

From my experience of transferring large files around the place, powerline beats wireless any day.

Yeah we should get good speeds here as well as we are about the same distance. The only problem is we wont get it until next year at the earliest (it cant come soon enough). Line gets upgraded to 20Mbs (from 8/10Mbs) in June so that will help things hopefully.

Not using Homehub on the line but think the current router (about 4/5 years old) is nearing the end of its life so probably time for a new one. Current router keeps dropping connection (DNS times out every now and again and needs reset to work again).

in regards to powerline. I use the cheap Ebuyer value 40mbs ones, one by the router and 3 around the house, An absolute godsend compared to wireless, no drop pouts or stability issues!

Agreed powerline are a bloody god send in large non-cat5 wired house. Much more reliable than wireless and excellent for streaming. Just make sure you get the 200av & above versions. I use a mixture of ebuyer value brand, TPlink & Solwise in my gf's house, currently have 8 plugged in so far.

    Re: BT Infinity 40/10Mbps?!

I have had BT infinity for about 2 months, speeds are rock solid

However i had a few issues. (not all BT issues)

    1. I used homeplugs (54mbps ones) and although they again are rock solid, due to the wireing in my house they wouldnt go about 12mb (be aware when running speedtests when using HP's), I then ran a cable straight to the PC and its fine (wasnt the homeplugs fault, was just the wireing)

    2. dont expect great P2P speeds, now and again its ok but the majority of the time its throttled massively.

    3. Wireless signal from the homehub(3) is pants.

In general its great for 90% of things

    Thanks

Fantastic down speeds but up never quite hits 10Mbit. No problems with the router either here. Although apparently macs have some trouble with disconnecting.

I think you probably mean 85mbs homeplugs & if so then 12mbs is on the low end of normal throughput (15-20mbp) line conditions, noise & overheads chewing up the rest. Also I've read that BT throttles P2P before 12am, not sure when it restarts throttling though.

    Re: BT Infinity 40/10Mbps?!

As much as BT keeps banging on about BT Infinity speeds and fibre optics...it's just not the same...

It's great that the UK is rolling out these uber fast speeds, and that it is rock solid too...I just feel let down by the forward planning/thinking. I'm living in an apartment built in the 1970s with fibreoptics just slung in (so not perfect by a long shot) and this is the kind of result I get.

This is what BT should be aiming and advertising for.

Sorry...I just feel that BT are short changing people...

    /rant

I actually looked at when BT infinity would be available in my old town...not for another 2 years at least...

    Re: BT Infinity 40/10Mbps?!

With regards to P2P throttling, from what I've seen the throttling starts about 4pm on weekdays till about midnight. Not sure about the weekends.

sleepyhead - nice speeds but you need to point out that those superfast speeds aren't the norm according to Speedtest. You can see that 97% of the rest of Japan is slower than what you have.

This is why I'm invloved in our bid to get Euro funding to get fibre in our little town. FTTC at first due to the amount of digging/cost associated with FTTH. the cabintes are easily upgradeable to FTTH though once installed.

FTTC is a just a springblock to hopefully having FTTH in the future. It would be interesting to see them offer homeowners the chance to pay for the extension of this to FTTH. No idea how much that would cost but with high speed connections becoming more important it could be a viable selling point.

Honestly, i think they should focus on getting FTTC rolled out country wide before they even consider FTTP/FTTH
