Confused. You mean give all users a FTTC connection, the only differnce would be ADSL against VDSL ?
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Yup, just multiplex all the analogue lines/adsl connections into the fibre and split out again the other end. Takes the miles of copper out of our ADSL connections and would give everyone a solid 24mb connection regardless of distance from the exchange.

    Re: BT Infinity 40/10Mbps?!

I would have thought the problem with that is that the multiplexing requires yet more active equipment (probably quite expensive too) in the cabinets, and thats one of the complex parts of the FTTC upgrade.

How about BT actually finish the ADSL2+ rollout first?

    Why?!

For most of the areas not covered ADSL2+ is quite useless upgrade, oh your speed has gone from 3mbits to 3.2mbits. Worth the money?

However getting fibre to the cabinets is a great start, and inmsho not a bad interim until we get FTTH because we are always finding new ways of squeezing more data down the copper and everyone pretty much should have a very short distance.

    1. I used homeplugs (54mbps ones) and although they again are rock solid, due to the wireing in my house they wouldnt go about 12mb (be aware when running speedtests when using HP's), I then ran a cable straight to the PC and its fine (wasnt the homeplugs fault, was just the wireing)

    2. dont expect great P2P speeds, now and again its ok but the majority of the time its throttled massively.

    3. Wireless signal from the homehub(3) is pants.

In general its great for 90% of things

    Thanks
Regarding #2. It depends on what P2P services you use. I use Usenet and it's always maxed out.

Where I live. 240 properties within about 500m of the exchange.

Obviously we dont need anything more than 8m.

The download speeds are pretty legimate for the people on fibreoptic. What puts it into the minority for me is the upload speeds. It's unusual to be able to be on 40mbit/s upload. Out of the people I know with fibre optic, most (if not all) don't use speedtest.net. After all, why would you when you grab files at 16MB/s and upload 3~5MB/s.

The point being that BT could do a lot more with it's fibreoptic network. It has such potential to be better, yet BT seem happy enough to do a half job. I'm not saying my connection is perfect though. NTT and OCN can do a better job with several little things. It's a good start from BT, but they need to really roll out the technology and push it closer to what it is capable of.

As an aside, I decided to test my mobile broadband dongle:

and before that is the fibreoptic at my apartment:

The mobile broadband is easily accessable and costs about £25 a month. My feeling on the percentages on speedtest.net is either it is mainly used by people on slower connections to check their lines capacity or it aggregates old tests from the past. Looking at the people on HEXUS who are on the Virgin 50Mbps plan, it seems they are in a special minority too...?

    Re: BT Infinity 40/10Mbps?!

Slightly OT but still talking about Infinity, I've just had a new modem installed by BT. I thought this was simply an upgrade to replace the original, prone to overheating modem (though it never overheated in my case). However, I had a quick chat with the engineer and he said that the new modem was necessary to allow BT pump data faster down the line. There have been no changes in my original speeds which tend to be about 36/7 so I'm assuming these faster speeds are the doubling of speeds that BT mentioned a couple of weeks back. Interesting stuff...

It's great that the UK is rolling out these uber fast speeds, and that it is rock solid too...I just feel let down by the forward planning/thinking. I'm living in an apartment built in the 1970s with fibreoptics just slung in (so not perfect by a long shot) and this is the kind of result I get.

This is what BT should be aiming and advertising for.

Sorry...I just feel that BT are short changing people...

    /rant

I actually looked at when BT infinity would be available in my old town...not for another 2 years at least...
Quite an unfair comparison when all our infrastructure over here runs underground while all/most the lines run above ground in Japan...
