GSM Laptop Cards

Hi, I have an idea for a little project which requires communicating with a mobile phone via text messages. For this I assume I will need a PCMCIA GSM card with SMS support, but what ones are the "favourites" for people who need to write software to work with them?

Or am I going about this the wrong way and need some kind of USB/Serial GSM module?

I was thinking about a cheap phone and datacable, but thought that it would be harder to write software to work with the device that way.

It shouldn't be too hard. If its serial its just using port communications. Although my knowledge of this is very limited.
If you have a phone why not buy a £10 cable and have a go. If your idea is a winner, you could always but a card after...
