dmz. Prepare to have a software firewall on , or have your ass whooped.
If you disable NAT then the pc network interface card you use needs to have a valid IP address to the outside world. NAT will take a private IP address and effectively swap it with a public IP address that can be used on the global, or public, internet. This will have to be provided by your internet provider. If you are using a modem then thisis how you wouldbe set up anyway I would have thought. You can check your IP address by opening a DOS window and typing the command ipconfig/all.
Like javalord said. Whatever you do make sure you have at least got a software firewall. Personally I prefer to use an ADSL router as a gateway router with a firewall feature set and additional software firewalling/IDS on the pc. Only run NAT in one place or the connection will fail if you are using dynamic NAT, which is the default for most routers.

May i ask why would need to disable NAT? you should be able to use NAT to your advantage by only forwarding the ports you need providing you with a extra line of defence.

Cuffz, I'd ask Santa for a decent ADSL router/firewall for christmas. I use a Draytek Vigour at home and that works very well providing good functionality and a reasonable hardware firewall. As well as 4 ethernet ports, USB printer port and wireless. £160. There are more, and also less, costly devices out there but that works well for me. Be a lot more secure than an ADSL modem. Though I assume you have a software firewall installed
