    Wifi Extender with throughput

    Is such a thing available?

Basically, we've converted our garage into a room, and I forgot to ask for it to be ethernet wired. The electrics are on their own circuit so I don't thing homeplugs will work, so I thought I'd put a wifi booster into a plug in the hallway (closest plug to the garage whilst still in the house), but this is the one that's used to plug the Dyson into, so I need one that has passthrough for the leccy. I also want to be able to get as close as I can to the AC2400 that my AC87U can output, what can people recommend? I've had a look on Amazon and I don't have a clue what's good and what's not...

    Re: Wifi Extender with throughput

You say the garage is on it's own circuit but is that still part of your house supply? If so then I believe the home plug solution will work.

Also, the structure walls might interfere with wifi signal.

    Re: Wifi Extender with throughput

Oh really? I thought it was completely disconnected. Saying that, it all comes into the same distribution board, so it should be OK.

Right then, off on the hunt for a single passthrough homeplug...

Actually, I don't need to, I'm going to have spares when I put in my ethernet from router to lounge...

    Re: Wifi Extender with throughput

But thinking about it, I do want to have wifi in there for phones, tablets etc. So I want a homeplug wifi repeater, with passthrough. Does such a thing exist?

Thinking about it again, I've got 8 power points in the room, don't necessarily need AC passthrough, so would this do:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/TL-WPA4220-...ac+passthrough

I've currently got the TP-Link AV500 kit, I presume this would just run at the lower speed?

    Re: Wifi Extender with throughput

I thought I wanted a homeplug-cum-wifi-extender with passthrough until I spent about 400 hours (ish) trying to configure a netgear wifi repeater in a chum's garage. Sometimes the devices would pass freely between the wifi networks (both using identical SSID, passwords etc), sometimes they wouldn't leave the old wifi network despite it being out of range, sometimes they'd not see either network. This was using Android, iOS, laptops etc.

    In the end I went with a TP-Link powerline kit with passthrough (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00LV41PO4) and a TP-Link WiFi-AP (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00VQ8P47O).

Installed in September '15 it's been completely faultless ever since. Seamless transition from network to network, no loss of service anywhere in the entire house/garage/grounds.

    Re: Wifi Extender with throughput

Those first ones are the same as I've got in the house, and the Wifi one I linked to has a button that clones the SSID and passphrase, hopefully that would give the same sort of effect. My only concern was having a 600Mbps unit where the rest of them are 500Mbps. I'm guessing not, and it'll just run at the speed of the slowest connection, and neither anywhere near the quoted speeds...

Edit: So did you run ethernet from a powerline adaptor in the same room to the AP, or direct from the switch to the AP?

    Re: Wifi Extender with throughput

Amazon returns are brilliant so if it doesn't work, you'll not be out of pocket. Yup, it'll all run at the speed of the slowest device, but unless you're transferring huge files it won't make any real world difference.

Powerline and AP were in the same room connected via ethernet.

    Re: Wifi Extender with throughput

It went OK, It was a bit of a faff having to go upstairs, click the WPS button, then run downstairs to plug in the thingy, but when I realised I could do it from the laptop via the web interface, it was fine. Works quite well, only regret is that it's only 2.4Ghz, not 5Ghz. But it was fine, as our guest only attached to the 2.4Ghz network anyway.

Get ethernet fitted. Powerline is a waste of time and money.

If it works and serves the purpose the OP wants it for, how is it a waste of time and money?

Replies like this frustrate me a bit. Running ethernet cables isn't easy and doable for a lot of people. If it was, Wi-Fi wouldn't exist.

Wifi is for phones/tablets and laptops. Everything else should be cabled.

This is for extending wireless capabilities to a part of the house which is in occasional use, so Powerline is fine.
