Sorry, late reply as you've already ordered, and looks quite good!

It is a custom built X99 PC with a 14core Xeon CPU. It is used to host a number of Virtual Machines for our software testing, aimed at 6-8 people. We have no need for domains or policy's, we're just too small to manage all that.
We split our server into 2 for a few reasons, the original server had become 'old' and no longer had the grunt for us to move forward. Rebooting the original server for tinkering with it for our testing would mean everybody had to come off storage as well.

So far the new system has been working well. The Qnap seems to be a set it and forget, I've not had to login at all for anything. We have no intention of it being accessible to the outside world so we've no need to keep it up to date.

    Re: Pre-built rack server recommendations

Synology have just announced that the latest DSM update (6.1) allows their hardware to become a DC - typical

I've finally got everything now, there was a slight delay with the server dispatch, so this coming weekend is installation-weekend. 48 hours to do the whole lot.
