Just read the original post and a few of the replies. Cant say I've had a bad experience with BT, it was easy to set up and install, only took a few minutes and the one call I had to make to them was answered very quickly and the problem solved instantly. Since then I've only had to call them twice for different queries, not actual problems, and they've been ace.

My only gripe with BT is the 12 month tie in and the fact that BT Broadband gives you a connection and nothing else, no pop3, no webspace... and believe me, webspace is essential nowadays.

Zak, I reckon Nildram just dont like me, three contacts I've had with em now... none of them have had good results on the customer service front... but in the spirit of giving htem one last go... I'll give em one last go.

I say Eclipse, been with them for about 12 months, no problem here

Excellent service, Fixed IP if required, they don't mind you sharing the connection, no minimum contract, decent web space, email etc etc

Woot, just found out that my local exchange is getting enabled next month and despite living a good couple of miles from the exchange I should be able to get at least 512kbps. Shame I'm moving out on Tuesday to live with pay-per-minute don't-hog-the-phoneline relatives

Okay, for my parents and brother, what's the cheapest 512k service taking into account setup charges, free modems etc... ?

As many other people have pointed out i would reccomend Nildram's service, they have a fantastic record and have been around for many years.

I have been with them about 14months now and i think i have had 2 days of problems, both of which were announced befroe hand because the backbone was being upgraded. Since then i have had no problems.

    Good luck making your choice

At my mum's house we use demon.net's 512kbps service, great stuff and their support is great.

I've been on Zen since last november (so nearly a year ) with little problems, there has been some downtime but that was out out of Zen's control (exchange problems) Can't comment on their support cos i've never had to phone them

hehe, I used to work at BT and to be fair... they are rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishe... avoid.
there are better deals with other suppliers, personally if I had the choice (and I do) Id go for cable everytime, loads more reliable.

easy to say to avoid BT... as most ISP rely on BT kit anyway, I suppose customer service wise you are better of with anyone but BT. But if you do want to avoid BT almost all together I recomend you get LLU with Bulldog or Easynet that's if your near an exchnage that they have enabled and if your loaded....

I use Freeserve. It's not the cheapest, but I've been using it for a year and it has dropped my connection just once. I've never have any problems hooking up and the speed is always good - usually achieving 59kb on long downloads.

I'd say 'Pipex' are the best deal atm but if you want to spend loads of $$$'s go for Nildram.

Same here. The down side is that they do cost more..
Their monthly charge without VAT is very close to some ISPs with VAT. Thats almost a 20% premium..

If they drop their 1MBit lines to £35 month...
