ok, well windows says 'oidnet' is the workgroup you can't access, wonder if one is oidnet and the other is default mshome or whatever it is

Both 0IDNET, I checked If I boot PC1 into Suse & PC2 into Free BSD, noo problem.

no, definately not, un-firewalled. Checked &double checked.

run the same command on pc 2, \\192.168.1.4\c$ & it returns 'access denied'

'access is denied' means user/password isn't the same, try running that from the start->run menu. and it should prompt you *fingers crossed*

lolol, try a scratch reinstall of windows, manually configure the networking stuff, and see if that helps any.

Me prolly who knows. Been a while since I did a clean install. Seeing as it's been unusually stable for quite some time. So un-micro$oft

But this problem applies to both machines? It would be strange if the same thing has gone worng with both installs of XP.

Did you check that all the correct network clients were installed and enabled for you network cards (local area connection properties)?. You should have;
Client for Microsoft Windows
File and printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QOS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol TCP/IP

QOS Packet Scheduler is pointless for 2 peers...
all the others are installed
