Networking 2 XP pc's

OK, I've got my gaming rig & my shuttle sitting on a 4 port router. Now I thought it would be easy to get the two machines to see each other right? Well I shut down the firewalls on both pc's, checked the windows one wasn't running & ran the network setup wizard on the winXP disk on both PC's. Still they can't see one another. What am I doing wrong? I can open a dos window & succesfully ping the IP of the other machine.

What I know about networking can be written on a pin head in magic marker, so a few pointers would be handy please chaps

open a commandline window and type "ipconfig /all" on both machines and make sure they are on the same subnet.. i.e. "192.168.0.x" subnet 255.255.255.0, also make sure that they are on the same windows workgroup.. you can find that by right clicking my computer, properties, and click on the 'computer name' tab..

I generally find that windows network setup wizard is a pile of bloatware sh*te (like all wizards) and causes more problems than it 'fixes'... anyway, hope this helps, let us know how you do

Cheers aidanjt, will give it a whirl when i get home. I think the workgroup defaulted to mshome on both pc's. Will keep you posted.

if it isn't ip address conflicts then you might have a crossover cable hooked up or something. its a handy refference to keep as well.

well thats weird.. ok, so they're both on the same domain
is the 'Server' service running on both machines? check in 'services.msc' you can start it from the run menu

Are they in the same workgroup in Windows networking - that'll make them ignore each other (if they're not, that is).

yea they are... thats why im thinking the server service is disabled..
erm.. out of interest.. are they both running xp pro or is home involved here?

Yes, server service is showing as started in component services lists

*blinks* this doens't make any sense, configuration wise everything seems fine, I can't understand why the systems don't show up to each other..

ok, try running "\\192.168.1.5\c$" and see if your comp can connect to your shuttle at all

May have found a prob. on pc#1, when I go to My Network Places & View Workgroup Computers I get
