    NTL Drops admin charge....

Just got off the phone with NTL, and I dropped the speed of my internet down (not switched off the modem yet so still running the 1.5mb speed )

But coming soon is the upgrades to the users, now 750k will become 2mb and 1.5 will become 3 but they are introducing enforced caps this time around.

But one of the things that really annoyed me is it was announced that new customers would get this speed as thier starter speed but existing customers would have to pay a £25 admin charge to get put on the new double speed for same money. NTL are no longer charging the admin fee when the upgrade kicks in and the upgrade will happen automatically.

So now I dont need to rant at them to get the fee waived

starting march 14th 750 to 2 Mbps at 30 GB cap... hmm seems reasonable
    if not downloading illegal stuff.

Is it still the case at this upgrade is not enforced? 300k to 1.5Mb with a 5gig cap is utter bull crap. Id rather stick to 300k with no cap.

there already is a cap, they just don't enforce it that well, 1GB a day is currntly for all users.

But basically in answer to your question no, by the end of 2005 I bet every provider has a cap in place, its just inevitable....

thats tight man, i didnt even know about the 1 gb cap, when i signed up i signed for a non capped service, how come they get to choose what they do, but if, for example i was to say i dont want it anymore within 12 months, they'd go mad and say id breatched the contract

Yeh i know about the 1GB cap, i was referring to the new capping system their bringing in with the upgrades. Sorry i didnt make that clear. Atleast for now i can stay with what i got. a 5GB cap for a 1.5Mb connection is not logical. Its obviously an attempt to get people to go to the higher speeds = more money for NTL.

    Because they provide the service.
You get something like 30 days following changes to t&c to leave foc (even within your initial 12 months contract).
If you don't you are deemed to have accepted the changes (& they do notify you of changes).

well the 750k service is going to a 2mb sevice with 30GB a month bandwidth as far as I am aware.

The classic is AOL are the only ones to offer no download limit, yet they use the BT and NTL backbones for thier service, so realistically AOL will be paying the bandwidth bill and you can bet your bottom dollar that they will kick off heavy users....

    Thanks m@

what on EARTH do you download to need more than 5gig?

5 years ago, that was an entire hard drive in a budget system.

In gaming terms even a 100 mg patch that Il-2 needs regularly, still leaves muchos room for gaming and surfing and driver updates etc.

    Hmmm let me see now, p0rn, 24, p0rn, E.R.,p0rn, Enterprise, p0rn, C.S.I, p0rn, Linux DVD distros, p0rn.

It's very easy to blow 5gigs, I regularly blow the 1g/day cap but over the month I'll rarely go over the 30gig limit.

With winamp radio on all day it uses 700mb bandwidth.....

Add surfing, gaming & you soon get to 1gb without even downloading anything!

I think the current cap isnt really enforced at 1 GB if you continually go over that everyday then they think you must be file sharing.

To be honest i wish they would put the speeds up as fast as they can go then you pay
on a bandwidth basis as long as its not stupidly expensive. Kind of like a mobile phone contract and free minutes.

I reset my router yesterday and im going to monitor all net traffic to see how
much im using so far after one day its at

WAN down 1680374 Packets up 1026542 Packets

Easy to hit the caps legally, demos, streaming radios/videos, pr0n, game patches - eg planetside patches can be huge, especially if you have to reformat, services like iTunes, napster etc, backing up files over the web...plenty of things that will take you over the cap.

Caps are going to be the way forward for now though, its what the industry is leaning toward. As part of my new company we are looking at ADSL reselling, and our prospective supplier is currently changing over to capped atm as its the only way to make any money at it now, its just not financially viable to offer 512k for prices like £20 a month without the caps, the bandwidth used by just those few hundred very heavy users just costs a fortune;/

I dont agree with caps - they go against many of broadbands selling points - but until UK bandwidth prices drop to the sort of prices that US customers enjoy I think they are here to stay.
