It's still doing it :(, even with the new ISP

Both computers wirelessly connected get cut off at the same time. Wireless connection still shows good signal, just IE and other programs cant connect. All I get is 404s until i restart the router.

I think it was even happening with one laptop connected wired.

how long before it goes wrong and have you tested with just one at a time with both of them?

Sounds like a router firmware upgrade might be needed.

check your router and access point for the correct DNS settings.

Can you ping internal and external IP addresses?? if so try to access a webpage using its ip e.g. google.com - 216.139.37.99

Im assuming its a DNS problem.

I updated the firmware once about 8 months ago, maybe there is another update.

It can be anything from 30mins to hours before it cuts out. It cuts out quicker if i have torrents running, which strangely enough they continue to run (i'll have to test this again to confirm sometime)

I cant ping anything, i cant even wirelessy connect to the router's control panel on 192.168.1.1. Doesnt accept anything wireless without a restart. I've yet to do further testing using the wired way.

I wouldnt have thought it would be a DNS problem unless the DNS can change itself mid-connection. But you know more than me so any suggestion is good

Is it just tha WAP that is acting fool?....do you have a wired connection to anything that you could use to test the connection with?
I think it was even happening with one laptop connected wired.
    Have you tested this??

It sounds like the router is overheating/crashing.

Need to know its make/model if its a cheap mentor one or something that would explain it.

It is a Linksys WAG54G, its just set up on a wooden floor in the lounge, should have no overheating problems.

Next time it goes i'll switch to wired and test it

its a linksys....explains the problem in my eyes

doubltless people will soon flame defending them, but I have had more problems with them than any other major brand (that excludes little ones like mentor)

Commonly they overheat, crash, break, go slowly and generally just dont perform well. I know that they are the cheap version of cisco stuff but thats the point, they are the CHEAP versions

I would suggest trying to RMA and get a replacement from a decent make eg belkin or netgear

Damn...I thought i was buying quality stuff by going with linksys.

You reckon this problem wont occur with a netgear equivalent?

I need to run 2 wireless PCs on a 1mb line, but i need something thats reliable that can handle things like torrent with lots of connections etc.

    Well....

First we need to make 100% sure that it is the router thats at fault, dont want you spending another £80 or so if you dont need to

So test it with wires if you can, stress test it, download a big file using a download manager like flashget using as many connections as possible and see if the same thing happens

Or just dont use BitTorrent, evil software that should be burned in hell forever

(ok so that last bit was an anti bitTorrent flame, but you should test it with wires first anyway)

I had this exact problem with my dlink router. It took them about 3 firmware upgrades to get it fixed. If i used any p2p software the router would say connected but not one computer could connect to the internet. I actually ended RMAing my router and the replacement did the same until they brought out new firmware. Hofefully linksys will do the same.

My friend also has this problem with a netger router, and he still hasnt got it fixed. Maybe its an England compatability thing?

If I were to buy a router now I would probably go with USR, they seem the best IMO.

So it isnt just me with the problem /. Never heard of USR.

So a 3com router will handle the connections? This is just getting silly having to reset 5-6 times a day, and I havent even started downloading yet

Yeah it will be the Linksys I'm afraid. It's not because they're cheap and nasty it's simply because they don't have very good range. The W**54g range were some of the first 802.11g products to appear and so have now been far surpassed. The problem is not with the hardware though as such, it's with the structure of British houses. These products were developed in America where houses very rarely have solid (ie. brick) walls.
