So it's good then? I've been toying with the idea of a 10gbe card in my new Synology 1821 (although Synology charge a rediculous amount for them).

Think they are around £250 and upwards normally, its clearly faulty. Think you should sell it to me for erm £40

I got the QSW-308-1C when it first launched - they didn't do managed 10gbe switches at that time.

iirc Synology limited compatibility on their cards to not work on non-Synology units, but I don't know if they gimped the NAS boxes to prevent third party NICs being used in them, so they could bleed you on the price of their cards. Even if you don't get a 10G NIC straight away, you can probably do port trunking on the NAS and the switch for improved throughput - it has four 1GBE ports, right?

Yea it has 4x 1gbe. Generally I move lots of data from my computer to my Nas and the 120mbps limit I currently have is too slow 😂

Same here - which is why I jumped at 10g as soon as I could afford it. Add to the fact that I'm terribly impatient.

It's an expensive affliction - I keep eyeing up their m2108-2c

Unfortunately however Synology charging £250 for the dual port 10gbe card is a bit much at the moment....

I just had a look - Rob at SPAN tried a QNAP QM2 card in a Synology NAS - no dice.

Which is mad, because I can install my QM2 in a PC.

It seems they have completely locked down the software sonthst it won't recognise other hardware. This forces you to buy their card. I am holding off because I'm hoping that someone will get a third party card to work....

A quick question, do I need anything else to use the 10gbe ports on this other than 10gbe network cards in my computer devices?

I see it has two combo ports (I'd prob use my cat6 cables). But it also has 2 sfp+ ports. I know nothing about Sfp+. But if my device has a 10gbe card with an sfp+ port, do I just buy an sfp+ cable (or whatever it is called) and slot it straight into the computer and switch like I normally would with my Ethernet cables or is there more to it than this?

You can use SFP+ 10g cards in your computer and connect via DAC cable to the switch, or you can use SFP to 10GbE modules to accommodate more RJ45 connections, if the combo ports aren't enough for you. The modules can be expensive - I got a couple at £40 each but £50- £60 is more likely.

DAC cables are fine, if the distance is only a few metres. Longer runs will require fibre cables and associated transceivers, which are at least a lot cheaper than the 10G RJ45 modules.

I wonder if the gimping of the cards came in with DSM7; it seems a hell of a lot of stuff happened when that rolled in.

I still find it hard to believe the NAS companies have to make their own network gear. The network companies should really be making that uneconomical by now.

I see AT&T in the States is talking about 5Gb Internet. That's nice, 'til it gets to the 1GbE network ports.

So, I have bought:

The QNAP Switch for £96
Synology E10G18-T1 Single Port 10GBASE-T/NBASE-T Network Card - For £119 - should be fine for my needs
For my PC - HP 700699-B21 Ethernet 561FLR-T Network Adapter (10GBE, 2 Port) - £22.98 - hope it's okay?

Now I just need cables to attach them to the switch. 1x 0.5m and 1x 3m. Any recommendations for cheapest?
