I think you can setup a domain name with some one like ddyns.org to your host name or somthing so if you have a dynamic IP it doesnt matter to much as you can just use the domain name which always goes to the right place ..... not sure if thats correct but i know ajbrun has done that, its a great idea because it means even though hes on a dynamic ip he can still host a ftp/webserver for firends and they dont need a new ip every time they want to access it

yes exactly the point i made last post. i used this method and it works GREATE! i run a ftp, database, and web server all in one without the need of a "static ip"

Dynamic for now, but I have a feeling Zen will let me have a Static for free,so if I ever want to do server stuff I'll get one. But for now, knowing I disconnect then re-connect as a different person(at least to the rest of the net) is a nice feeling.

cool - so its nearly 50/50 then at the present.

I used to have 8 Static IP addresses with Nildram when I was at home, but no I just have the 1 static IP on bulldog until I feel the need to get some more once the latest system I have gets built, configured and installed.

Thanks for that - I was just being nosey and guessed that it would be about 80/20 in favour of dynamic.

    Looks like I was wrong wasn't I

sorry dude must of missed your post. but any way yep its a great idea so if your on a dynamic IP you dont really have much to worry about as your not really missing out on any thing!
    Just setup a domain name!

Don't pay for one, but I've had the same IP address from Pipex since we first got ADSL just over a year ago.

don't really see any advantage to static ip. www.dyndns.org is just fine for me. perhaps it'd be different if i was using a router instead of a server though...

Dynamic, but as others have mentioned, NTL don't roll IPs very often. You tend to find that if you cycle your cable modem, you'll have your IP changed.
I don't have any reason to have a static IP address. I have a dev server at home with web servers and stuff running on it. I get to it using DynDNS, which is free, and my router has support for it built it.
Just set up some port forward rules and you is larfin.

I use No-ip.com for dynamic dns. I have a smoothwall box as a router/proxy/firewall and it includes the update client in the default build.

I even paid my $30 to have a proper domain name redirected to my webserver.

I have had sites running in my DMZ with host headers, FTP sites and so on with no problems at all :-)

If you know how to confiure it you don't need static, I have seen DNS lag of no more than 36 hours and as someone mentioned earlier, as a telewest customer the DHCP expiry is something stupidly high....

Dynamic? Static? What is the difference when u attach yourip to a DNS:

    https://www.dyndns.com/account/services/hosts/dyndns/

There are even programs to edit in the new ip if it changes but this is going a little far for me im content to check that my ip is still the same by visiting the above webpage.

Im also behind a firewall, router whos MAC address is the same as seen by the isp, so in fact the dynamic ip never changes unless I force a change of mac address.

BY did away with the need to enter a mac address in selfcare to register ur NIC mac address (probably cause too many support calls), but changing mac address usually forces a new ip.
