    Distance weirdness on ADSL

At my house we can "just" about get 1Mb, on the checker it says we may be able to get it, but someone will need to come over and check the line. Ok well thats fine, but yesterday I found out that someone across the road from me (litterally, a few yards away) is on 2Mb. I thought they must me wrong but put their number in anyway. Low and behold "Congratulations, you can get 2Mb" without any issues at all. What the hell?! Does anyone have any idea why this would be?

You said ACROSS the road, therefore you may be both using different cables/wires back to the server at BT....
Have you tried typing in your neighbours phone number?

Here is an image of the places in question. 1 is me. 2 is my next door neibour, 3 is the house across the street and 4 is my friends house. I've found out why me and me next door neibour can't get it, and the house across the street can. They are on a different pole than us, but that is rediculus that they can get 2Mb without issues and we can only get 1Mb WITH an engineer visit. They are both off the same exchange and both off the same "Break out box" which is quite some distance away (although the same distance as each other as the crow flies).

Is there any way of getting moved from this telephone pole to the one just down the street? There seems to be an obscenely substancial difference in line quality from ours to theirs (and we're roughly in the middle anyway).

When I ordered BB for my grandad, BT came and installed a new line from the box or excahnge, because his line wouldnt support 2mb. Dunno if theyd do that for you.....

Installing a new line from the box wouldn't help as all the people coming off this pole have the same issue. I also doubt they would do that.

Ok, officially pissed off (lets hope there is a swear filter):

I tried to speak to BT and thus ended up trying to understand some ****ing Indian person with no idea WTF I was on about, then got transfered to Ireland who then transfered me to somewhere up north who kept giving me complete BS and then said that I need to ring Bulldog instead, despite the fact that the line is still with BT and will still be leased from BT once we transfer.

So, I rang Bulldog, which after eventually getting through, I gave them all the details then they REFUSED to speak to me because I'm not the account holder. No, I'm just the ****ing person that set it all up, signed it all up and configued all the ****ing machines!

The account will be in my moms name, as is everything else, but she doesn't know what she is talking about, argh.

Does anyone know of anyone that I can talk to about this that has an IQ HIGHER than a Cabbage?

Physical distance between your house and your friends is almost irrelevant.

It all depends on the wiring, from the house all the way back to the exchange. Both the length and quality of it.

The fact is, the stats on your friends line are better than yours. BT used to be more leniant in what stats they would allow to pass for 2MB. After they had nothing but problems with highly unstable lines, they're now very strict about it all. Your chances of persuading them to up your line to 2MB are extremely slim, and even if you do, you're likely to have a very unstable line.

Do you currently have broadband? Can you post your line stats? (Downstream Attenuation & Downstream noise are what's important)

Who is your ISP? If it isn't BT, then you cannot contact them about this, you have to go via your service provider, who will (or should) escalate the problem to BT... Zen are good at this....
