High CPU usage = wireless going down

At least I think it's because of high CPU usage..

Whenever I go on a game, or am converting a video, or something that uses 100% CPU usage (apart from folding for some reason.. as that is on 24/7) the wireless connectivity on my computer disconnects. Nothing happens with the wireless router, just my computer.

I don't have a clue why this happens, I'm using a wireless USB stick to connect, secure network etc.

    Any ideas? Is this normal?

    Thanks

USB requires a certain amount of processing from the cpu. The priority of the thread that maintains the wireless connection is probably equal and maybe less than the priority of your game/whatever is running at 100%, in that way the wireless isn't getting the cpu time that it needs and so drops the connection. Folding runs at a very low priority so that it doesn't interfere with anything

I would try to find the process that controls the wireless connection and increase its priority by one level, see if that helps

Yeah, I thought it might be something along the lines of that, but wasn't sure.

    Will look into it, thanks.

Hmm, can't seem to see anything in the task manager, messed about with "Safely remove hardware" and can't find anything on Google *scratches head*.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks

Go to Task Manager, processes tab. Find the process responsible for your USB wireless adapter and right click, then select priority from there. Is your PSU up to the task? could be that when drawing a large charge from the PSU the USB adapter can't get the charge it requires, and so drops, but I'm speculating...

Simplest way round this would be to get a PCI wireless card imo.

If these games are online games just for example if your computing is having to send loads of packets and recieve them at the same time there maybe a chance that some are corrupting as your processor cant process them.
Now iam not to sure on this idea - Now supposing this is the problem then adjusting the MTU (maximum transmission unit) may help. You will need to read up about this before you think about what iam going to say next
you can change it using a tool that BT have developed - now obviously you want you wont use it for your internet connection you will select it to edit your wireless adaptor (sorry couldnt find the link, google BT network optimizer see if that gets any thing) or (and i wouldnt suggest this unless you dont know what your doing) is to change the MTU by editing the value of it in the Registry.

If iam wrong and its not the MTU (which theres a high chance of) then it maybe its something like the channel your wirless is set on, so try changing that or heavy encryption may cause it to drop when under preasure.

-these are only suggestions and prob not the solutions atall but id try it if i didnt know what was wrong

Splash: I know how to change priority's, but I don't know which one is for the USB wireless stick... that's my point really. I am using the default drivers and let windows do all the work, but last night I tried installing the drivers and software I got with it, but couldn't get it to work so just stuck with Windows' version.

Ramedge: I'm pretty sure that's not the problem, because it happens with ALL games, including offline games, and not even games, just things that use high CPU usage (eg. video encoding).

Side note.. DR TCP is a good tool for changing the MTU (had to use it when using a router with AOL.. when I used to be with them).
