    Tiscali - any good?

Looking for broadband for my brother. We can only get ADSL in Aberdeen so it's just a matter of choosing a provider. He's looking to spend about £20 a month and is a little concerned about usage allowance as he will probably listen to a lot of internet radio and use Skype.

The 2Mb Tiscali deal looks pretty good at £17.99 a month. What is their reliability and support like?

I'm with nildram, but their equivelant packages are more expensive.

Reliability fine, support awful. My mate applied for 2mb had to wait about 3 weeks for them to sort it out and then when he had the "cheek" to start downloading more stuff then they thought was OK they cut him off and stopped him using his broadband. No warning or anything bang out of order. Then he had to spend several weeks arguing with them b4 he could get a MAC code. I would in the past have recommend Pipex but it seems they are also slipping. Pipex are very reliable 2 outages in 2 years of no more than a few hours is damm good. Only used CS once and while i felt i was fobbed off it was friday afternoon and "the computers were down". They actually solved the problem behind the scenes. www.adslguide.org is a good place to look. With line speed being upped and LLU being rolled out more and more maybe it would be worth hanging fire for another week or so 24meg for around £24 sounds good to me if u can get it.

    Tiscali? Hah!

I have been with them for almost 3 years, but I am going to leave them now.

For almost 3 years it was a fine service, I had problems with them for about 2 months, with speeds slower than 56k, but yet had a 1mb line, and paying the 1mb line rental, £20 at the time.

Now, becuase of my downloading(about 800mb a day, 3 days a week) They have decided to limit my account during peak hours(6pm-11pm Mon-Sun).

I will be switching to either, Zen or UKonline.

Avoid them if you download a lot.

    *EDIT*

I forgot to mention they have the WORST customer support in the world, its outsourced to india, and they do not know a thing about whats going on.

Also, once your with them, if you decided to leave them, they do not support migration, which means you will be 10-20 days without any broadband if you decide to switch to a different supplier.

I've heard quite a few bad things about Tiscali - particularly their support.

I've been using Virgin.net for quite a while now and generally speaking they have decent support and service.

I know a few people who have used ukOnline - and i've never heard any complaints!

Some friends in central london signed up through tiscali ~2 years ago. Never got it! Have been paying since and all contact attempts have been arsed up by them for some reason or another.

    home = nildram 2mb = 200kb/s+ all day
uni = tiscali '2mb' = usually 100kb/s tops, stupid peak-time limits.. absolutely rubbish.

so next year i'm gonna use nildram as it'll only end up being an extra quid-each per month per person for a much better service
