Remote desktop to a PC on ADSL

Does anyone have a good, easy to follow guide for setting up a remote desktop connection (XP Pro) between two PC's connected to the Internet by ADSL ?

I'd like to be able to connect to my parents PC to help them out without having to travel 320 miles I'm guessing it's just a case of setting up a NAT port forwarding or something ?

    Ta

yes you need to setup port forwarding port: 3389 tcp.

They need to setup an account on windows with a password.
they need to switch it on: control panel - remote

you could just set them up a msn account and use remote assitance

There are numerous articles on the Internet on how to do this. Just do a Google search for anything like "remote desktop setup".

There is a basic article on the Microsoft site, which should get you started: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...moteintro.mspx

You will need to enable Port-Forwarding on your parents router. The port that the Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) uses by default is 3389. You might also need to enable this port on the Windows Firewall (or any other Firewall software that they might be using).

Also, be aware that your parent's IP is probably dynamic and will more than likely change every so often.. To make things a little easier you might like to think about a Dynamic DNS service. I currently use http://www.no-ip.com - they provide a free domain and software which will ensure that the domain will always point to your parent's PC.

Hope this helps you to get started!

Thanks for that - I already use a dynamic DNS for my Geovision (CCTV) system but hadn't thought about using it for RDP.
