So this should come online on the 31st, does this mean all exchanges are being switched over, or does it mean that they will start upgrading them then? Is it a hardware or s/w switch they need to do?

That is a release date for 8MB.
Although it is upto the ISP wether they do the upgrades or not...
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/03...upgrade_8mbps/BT's current plan to enable 8Mbps is only the maximum attainable rate of ones line, therefore not everybody will be able to get the full speeds. When it is released on 31st March BT estimates that 78% of phone lines will be able to get 4Mbits and above, 42% to get 6Mbits and above and only those living close to the exchange (approx 500m) will be able to obtain the full 8Mbits.
There is a twist: it will be up to ISPs whether UK citizens can get their speed increase as their user database will need to be upgraded which may take months, but most of the UK should be experiencing faster speeds over the next few months.
So if you are on Pipex max service, on the 31st you get max?
Depends on your ISP. Free upgrade unless your on a certain ipstream product, in which case £5 or so.
Yes - Wicked![]()

You can check your exchange here, I think most have a 31st March date, but seeing as it's BT...
Mine has ADSL Max enable date: 31 Mar 2006 (Tentative) as well![]()
I think we just have to wait![]()
I'm guessing that when this is implemented, it would 'extend the reach' of broadband? Like now, we live 1.5 miles away from our exchange, and can only just get 1MB. BT has a minimum of 2MB speed curently if you can get it. I'm assuming, even if BT don't upgrade us to 8MB, then we might be able to get the full 2MB instead?
Is there any truth in that? Would a house that could get 1MB before, be able to get 2MB after the upgrade?
Is there anyone doing any packages on 8mb max with unlimited usage? I pay £35 a month for Zen which is fair enough but if i thought i could get 8mb unlimited for around the same price id be willing to move.

This is supposed to tell u how fast u can get but not sure how accurate it is http://www.dslzoneuk.net/maxspeed.php.
Only people real close to the exchange are gunna get 8mb everyone else will depend on line length
From the 31st exchange that have been enabled should become active BUT if the exchage is full or its not a major exchange this could be put back. I think a lot of it is based on demand at that individual exchage.
IF you look at the RF date on sam knows that should be a little more accutre if its geen 31st looks promising, amber month after, Mine oldham is red and ive read on the be site that its going to be april b4 that happens. Black means no upgrade planned
Spoken to Pipex and they say unless you're signed up to their Max product now, you won't get an upgrade in speed. You have to switch plans, take up a new 12 month contract, and pay extra. And wait until they've updated their database.
Bt have actually upgraded every exchange which had a date of the 31st to max apart form the sheffield one, i was expecting lots of excuses and setbacks, now roll on 8mb
