IIRC BT have a postcode checker on their site that will guess. However if it does guesstimate BT max speeds it will be very innacurate as phone line routing can be a bit random sometimes

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial check on your postcode indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.

Our check also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 6.5Mbps up to 8Mbps.

The BT checker always seems to underestimate things a bit in my experience. I would say you should get 8mbit on ADSL and 14mbit+ on ADSL2+. That is a guess and I couldnt say any more unless I knew your line stats (attenuation/SNR), which you unfortunately dont have.

Who are you signing up with out of interest?

firstly me rainbow and mantis are moving in lol. Here are the results from that line check link:
Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.

The following services are available in your location:

    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    BT Wholesale SDSL
    Bulldog LLU
    Homechoice LLU

You are connected to the Surbiton telephone exchange.

ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services

According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 6.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

    Standard ADSL RAG results:
    You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
    You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
    You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
    You can receive 256Kbps ADSL

You are approximately 485 metres from the exchange (straight line distance).

So it looks i could get some kinda ADSL? it will be a 2nd floor flat

Why not go with Bulldog then? It is worth a go as they offer a student discount and when you combine their phone and ADSL together it would certainly work out cheaper. Plus you have the advantage of ridiculously low pings on a Bulldog connection (as low as 6ms is what ive seen). Plus its unlimited.

If thats the case excplicit, i will seriously look into it. Low pings is all im after. But i heard that bulldogs CS was completly dire, going by threads on here and adslguide.org?
    Any recent update on this?

Their CS used to be appauling, but from all accounts it seems to have improved quite a lot lately... Most Bulldog customers only contact CS when first connecting to the service (the same with most ISPs) so in my opinion I could get by without most of the time. I am very happy with Be* at the moment but it seems Be* arent in your area....

bulldogbroadband.com has all the info you need.

It comes through a BT line, but they take over the whole line (phone and DSL) rather than just DSL (like most ISPs). This does give cheaper calls compared to BT's but compared to 1899 or similar they are more expensive (and they block most of the 1899/... providers numbers). Whether this has any effect on you will be whether you even know what 1899.com and others are....

BTW, might be worth messaging a user on adslguide.org.uk when joining as I believe you might get some money back....

If you join their UP TO 24meg service (labelled 16meg as that is the average if you are reasonably close to the exchange), you also get a free ethernet modem.
