    Hi

If you type at your browser url window(ignore underscores): _http://212.58.227.73_ Do you get the BBC webpage displayed?

If so then it is a DNS issue in Windows or router possibly. If not then it is likely to be IP related. Try and configure fixed IP address under Network settings for the network adapter and ensure that the default gateway entry is configured (under 'Advanced' tab in Internet Protocol TCP/IP properties window for the network adapter in use) as are the DNS servers, both primary and secondary .

    Still not working..

    Hi Geezerone,

Thanks for your reply. Checked and did the neccessary, however it still won't work.

Any other ideas I can try would be appreciated. My laptop works on the router and the Desktop works using Linux (Knoppix DVD) it works no problem, so something in Windows is wrong. It has worked once recently.

I don't want to re-install windows as then I have to re-install all my progs etc. Although I do have a backup of my system on a 250GB USB drive.

    Any other suggestions welcome.

You need to be reinstalling windows every 3-6 months anyway, registry keys get added with new programs, some get left behind when you uninstall, some uninstallers delete keys it shouldn't, some delete dlls they shouldn't, leave some it should have.. they amount of cruft and damange left on a windows system after 2 years is like a human being standing in front of a fission nuclear reactor after 2 days, it stripes out the parts of your DNA that you need and adds parts you don't need.. And eventually you fall to peices, it's call registry rot.

If you want to save yourself and everyone else a huge headache then just reinstall Windows... thinking about it logically you've spent more time posting messages on forums and tinkering with settings already than it would take to reinstall windows and any programs.

    I know, I know.

I use System Mechanic to clean out that type of garbage, but maybe you are right...it certainly seems that way. Boo Hoo...Boo Hoo.

What bugs me is that if/when I reload Windows I have to go through all the crap re-loading eveything and lose saved games etc.

I use Acronis True Image 8.0 does anyone know if there is any way to restore all my settings/ saved games/ photos from the backup system disk once XP has been reloaded?

What is the best way to use a two disk system (non RAID) to avoid this type of nonsense in the 1st place?

The easiest way I've found is to just backup C:\Documents And Settings, and restore it after reinstalling windows and all your programs.. you can technically move docs & settings over to another partition/drive, but it's a lot of messing around, i havn't bothered with it because I don't even like the way windows handles profiles in a sloppy manner.

OK..thanks sounds like I still lose my saved games....I really don't want to return to Zero on Oblivion.

Interesting tho....I have not installed any new devices but after changing some settings as per previous post, when clicking 'close' the system crashes......Microsoft OCA says a device driver caused the fault but do not identify the device/driver.

Oblivion stores game profiels and saves in Documents and Settings. As so most modern games and programs

Have you got an old restore point you could use prior to this happening and if so what happens if you use it. I had a strange windows system problem once which a restore point fixed for me and would advise you look at this first of all before undertaking any reinstallation of Windows?

Did you try what PeterB suggested and removing and reinstalling the TCP/IP stack?

Can you login to the router ok or ping it even from the command prompt?

Although reinstalling Windows would be a fairly sure way of fixing it I would like to know what lies at the heart of this matter and you more so I would imagine.

It's his DHCP client service crapping out, we've already established that, it's a freqent registry rot problem I've seen many times.

    I could ping...tonight I can't!

Tried restore point to no avail (last week)

The connection has valid IP address, assigned automatically.

I haven't tried removing and reinstalling the TCP/IP Stack as I don't have the foggiest idea what it is or how to do it.

Does this work with fixed IP addresses and if not have you tried it? Registry cleaners can induce problems as well as fix them.

Do you have a spare hard disk onto which you could install windows from scratch? You would then have your user data intact and can copy over at will.

I have tried fixed IP and it didn't resolve the problem.

I dont have a spare HDD - I already have two in the PC a WD 180 GB Caviar and a Samsung Spinpoint 200GB.

Is it possible to use Acronis to create a partition for XP on the Samsung, then copy over data to the Samsung, then switch the Samsung to be the Primary drive?

Or could I copy all the data from the primary drive to my external 250GB, clean the drive (primary) and reinstall windows there, partitioning the drive?

What size partition should I have for Windows? Is any of this possible?

I haven't used Winsockfixer before find it here but may be worth a go (backup data first and create restore point)

Use Partition Magic to resize the partitions, how much the Windows partition depends on your needs, for a basic windows partition 10GB would be handy, if you're going to be installing games and other big bloated programs 40-50GB would be more comfortable... that should give you plenty of space to store data and documents.

Well, after all that I just went to Scan and bought A Dlink DGE-530T. Installed it tonight and went to connect...it didn't....

Then set DNS 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 and it works.

No idea what happened to the Onboard NV Lan - would like to find out, but the Nvidia boards are full of people with problems with the Nvidia Network Controller - and surprise surprise, there has been no response from Nvidia.

I will stick with the D-link, at least I can call them for support should I require it.

So long and thanks for all the fish...
