    dg834pn problems

recentely got the netgear dg834pn and i have been having a fair few problems with it

    1) the adsl connection constantly drops out and can only be reconnected by turning the router off and on again

    2) the wireless connections gets very poor signals even when close to the router this is using the wpn111 usb adapter and wpn311 adapter tried 2 different pcs and uses the router for only 1 pc at a time

    3) when using the wired mode also getting bad speeds did an adsl test and got 0.2mbs downspeed normally about 2.7mbs when i was using a usb modem. ( i have found this was a temporary problwm with aol and has now bwwn fixed my speed are now faster than what they used to be)

my isp is aol (adsl max supposed conenction speed 4.5mbs)

    any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried upgrading the firmware? I did for my DG834 and it improved ADSL stability a great deal.

Nope, been very solid for me. Only niggle is that at 1am every day, the wireless seems to reset for a split second. It's completely unnoticeable, except for the fact that MSN disconnects (and then reconnects again 20 seconds later). Doesn't just happen on the PN though.

Got a DG834PN here, had no problems at all really. Maybe have it swapped out with a replacement unit, because something doesn't seem right.

I have DG834PN and it is rock solid. Have you enabled wireless?

Is you router on the little stand legs so it is standing on it's narrow end vertically rather than laying flat?

yup on legs and wireless randomly stopped working.

been through every diagnostic there is its definitely a new random hardware fault router but getting netgear to agree with this is a whole different matter.

wireless light doesn't show even when doing factory reset which auto enables wireless etc. yet netgear don't understand this concept.

Given that the wireless problem is with the Router and not the PC card, surely this device is less than a year old and should be replaced by the supplier, or if over 1 year but less than 2 years - which is definitely is, then NetGear provide a 2 year warrenty, so insiste they provide a replacement unit.

I have installed 5 or 6 of these DG834PN units and all heve been really good.

However I am moving the PCs my daugters have in their rooms off wireless on to HomePlug (Develo 200) as these are yielding much faster throughput, and only using wireless for a 'roaming' laptop.
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

yep its under warranty im just not a fan of netgears tech support spent 20 mins on phone to them the other night at which point they fobbed me off with a case number and hung up as they had no idea what they were doing and could not understand my problem.

they claimed upgrading the firmware would fix it as if having an older firmware makes the router magically break.

OK i'm the biggest fan of DDWRT/Smoothwall etc. you're likley to find but i'm also aware that the 834 series is pretty solid (early 834G's had issues, later revisions were better and the pn's were fine by and large).

It seems to me you have to break this down as you mention two issues, slow downloads (either wired or wireless) and loss of wifi.

Firstly a line issue could explain the slow downloads, does the router show anything meaningful in the logs ? can you test the line with your old modem and see if it gets the same slow performance ?

Have you plugged into the master socket rather than an extension ?

Can you replace the dsl filter and check the connection again ?

Also you are making sure you haven't got any spyware/p2p/other users hammering the connection at the same time you're speed testing arent' you ? The last such thread I read resulted in the op saying 'when I turned off UTorrent it was fine'

Also in order to get an accurate speed test the majority of online speed tests are flawed, www.broadbandspeedtest.net will give you a balanced indication as to your actual speed as opposed to how it performs connecting to one server somwhere in the us or mainland europe as this is hardly indicative of how the line is actually performing.

What are the line stats ?

Assuming all of the above are ok then you can start looking to the router as the problem, untill then i'm with the 'dumb yanks' as with all due respect it doesn't seem like you've eliminated the other options before pinning the tale on the netgear ...

    Hello!

I'm new here and have just aquired dg834pn, hope I'm not asking about something covered elsewhere! Thought this the best place to post given the subject. Where I live I have Virgin Cable Broadband, with a cable modem. I'd obviously like to use the equipment I have, so I'm curious to know the best way of connecting the two and obtaining glorious wireless internet in my own home! I would be connecting them via ethernet.

    Cheers!
