    NTL modem problem

My friend has an NTL modem problem. The modem wont give out IP addresses when connected over ethernet.

Called up tech support and they told me that my "ethernet cable needs drivers" and "to contact the manufacturer". They also insist that this is the case for two computers with three network cards between them and three cables bought separately from different places - I.e. they are retarded and useless.

They have also replaced the modem three times with the same result.

Has anyone else had a similar problem and any tips on how to sort it out?

Its annoying having to connect through USB and then using ICS in WinXP when it should be working straightaway.

    Thanks

What IP addresses is it giving you?

Seems strange that it happens with 3 different devices :S

Do you have your ethernet adapter to resolve IP via DHCP?

Is your friend trying to connect all three PCs at the same time? If so he will need a router to sit between the PCs and the modem. Hooking the model directly to a switch or hub won't work.

Other than that, have you tried wiggling the cable about a bit on the modem end? The only NTL install i've ever looked at had a dodgy connecter that wouldn't make contact properly all the time. Even if it before it connects a PC or router to the internet, the Ethernet LED should light up on the modem.

Tried it plugged in directly from modem to pc, tried it with modem->switch->PC.

Ethernet light does come on, and when plugged into switch, the lights on that come on too.

Windows tried to get IP address and then comes up with limited/no connectivity message.

Not sure what IP address its giving me, will check and post back -> But does that actually matter ?

And the PCs are connected to receive IP via DHCP ...

I Also Have A Problem With NTL/IP Address!!

Until today (Saturday 14th October 2006), I have had no problem connecting to XBOX360 Live at the same time as other/s using the pc!!
Its getting to the point where I have run out of ways to sort this mess out!!

My XBOX360 settings for IP search are set to Automatic?

As always until now....My XBOX360 is plugged into my modem?

Then there is a message which goes as follows:- Limited Connectivity, I have then procede to repair the problem, which doesn't work?

I have contacted NTL (This morning) and they can only suggest paying out ridiculous amounts of cash? Or changing the modem to one exactly like the one I am using now?? Surely this will lead to the same problem in time?

Please help..........It's doing my head in now!!

    Thanx

As per Funkstar's advice it would be more sensible to get a router connected to the modem and then plug everything in and out of the router. That way the modem only has to hand an IP address to the router once and after that the router hands out an IP address to any connected device that needs one.
Routers are pretty reliable, more so than NTLs network.
