    Flaky broadband

    We just got BBand installed about a week ago, and its a little flaky, and we're wondering if we should phone our ISP. (freedom2surf)

    It *works*, but its just a bit slow at times (for adslmax) and somtimes becomes very high latacy.

    I understand the adslmax takes a while to find it "optimum" speed. But how long does that take, surely it should be ok now? how can you tell?

    How often does it drop?

    What speed are you syncing at?

    There are thresholds that BT will accept as a fault

    for speeds over 2 meg your speed needs to be below 400 kbps.

    Do you know if your on BT or is it LLU?

    The lines with BT.
    - Testing it just now, the adsl guide speed test gives the speed at around 1.7 Mbps, bandwidthplace's speedtest gives a measly 1.2, and pitstops pinger, an average ping of about 100-150.

    However, othertimes this week adslguide had given around 5.5Mbps, although the other two have been about consistant.

    Yeh, during the 10 day period your line sync and speed will probably go up and down like mad.

    If the speeds are slow in the evenings then this is most likely caused by contention. Basically if there are loads of people on your exchange connected and using the connection then your speeds will suffer.

    Check out http://status.zensupport.co.uk/exchanges/ And put in either your phone number or post code. that should give you the current state of the exchange. If its red or amber then your exchange is running hot if its green then Bt are saying the exchanmge is fine although in more and more cases this is still running hot but not too bad for BT to acknowledge it

    Make sure you leave your router on all the times as well. This will help get a more stable connection.

    - No prizes for when the students all moved back.

    The postcode LE115DQ is connected to the Loughborough exchange

    According to BT's latest data the VP status of your exchange is RED.
    A date of 03/11/2006 has been set by BT for the exchange to be upgraded.

    This means that your exchange is running well below the performance thresholds published by BT. If you are experiencing Slow speeds then this is the most likely cause. Once the exchange has been upgraded the speeds should start running at normal levels again. If you still experiencing issues then you should contact our technical support team to carry out further diagnostics.

    I made the site

    MY mate lives in rusholme in manchester and the same thing happens for him to. The thing that sucks the most though is BT dont see it as much of a problem because for chunks of the year the areas are fine.

    My area is red atm but Im only on 1 meg so it doesnt affect me

    A lot of the exchanges are down at the moment for a wide variety of reasons, I checked on the checker and ours (Durham) should be healthy again on the 6th November.

    Our speed is very volatile at the moment but we are in the training period as well, but all should improve

    Im with UKonline, never got problems until last week, I got error 718 occasionally, rang them up, seems to be fixed now.

    I think it's the ISP side, because my phone line works properly all the time.

    Mines gone into the red (at home this is) recently, so I'm guessing thats why Remote Controlling my PC is soo slow

    EDIT - Just used http://speedtester.bt.com/ - and my throughput is 5.5mb whilst according to them, my line is 7150kb/sec and actually connected at 8128kb/sec. How odd...
