(my figures are 17.5 loop attenuation, 28.5 SNR which supports 2Mb/s flawlessly - I'm about 1Km from my exchange))

That said, it does look as if there is some sort of loss on your line, which should be escalated by your ISP to BT for investigation.
^Yep you are totally correct. Mixed up my p's and q's.

What i meant to say was that his attenuation was too high and that can be noticed from a balance (dB's) that is too low.

Although, SNR does not need to be high and profiles are generally set as 10 being acceptable. If you are only paying for a 2M line then that's why you have a SNR of 28.5 as your line can support substantially more. The higher your speed, the lower your SNR.

    before you despair:
....go find your main BT socket, which has a front plate. Normally near the front door, though not always. Unscrew ithe front plate.

Behind that you'll find a standard BT plug socket...its the master and works normally with normal phones etc.. When you unplug this facia plate you've disconnectec the entire house phone system.

Then plug your filter and ADSL connection into that.

    Then try it.

Its worth having cable everywhere for 24 hours. If need be, move the PC into the hallway...leave it on the floor there..and check.

If you keep the connection...you know its internal house phone cabling that needs sorting.

    If not....you're snookered!

    it's BT time!

It sounds like your exchange VP is mullered..

The line length thing is bogus, they just tell you that to put you off.

For example, these are my stats:

    Data Rate
    Stream Type Actual Data Rate
    Up Stream 448 (Kbps.)
    Down Stream 3328 (Kbps.)

    Operation Data
    Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 19 dB 2 dB
    Attenuation 63 dB 52 dB

I had very similar issues to you until they upgraded the exchange, and I still get them once in a while when the exchange runs into capacity problems.

The main problem is that most exchanges cannot cope with large numbers of users connected at the same time, which tends to happen at peak times, once you hit the limit, people with the more unstable connections tend to see the problem first - the line disconnects, tries to reconnect, can't get a slot, so you've effectively lost your broadband until the number of connected users drops off..

Well i am being re-graded to DSL MAX today and an engineer is going out to replace a cable in my house, but 2 engineers have already said its fine (but i had no faith in them, 99% of BT engineers no very little about ADSL).

I'm not holding my breath, but it seems like BT are actually trying to get it sorted.

according to one guy i spoke to, by 2011 BT aim to have broadband to every house, regardless of line length etc. They have just started a massive upgrade process. But again, don't hold your breath.

isn't it funny how Everyone in France has 24meg connections and we're all still trying to get a stable 8meg connection!

I can just about get 512 kbps on my broadband but it loses synch an awful lot. It seems fairly random but it could be lots of people on the old (and very distant) phone exchange, I suppose..

Frankly, I'd kill for a stable 2+ mbs service but as I live in the sticks there's not a chance in hell.

Yep, I live in the Shropshire sticks. TBH, i would kill for a stable 512 right now. Most of my friend who live just a few miles away get 8 meg. In fact one guy lives even further in the sticks than me and get 4meg.

BT - are planning high speed broadband for even us in the sticks, but it will take years - http://www.btplc.com/21cn/ BT are replacing thier entire phone network, but the site says it wont effect me until atleast October 2011

is there any way to check the status of this for sure?

There looks to be some green dots in my area (Aberdeen, North East Scotland) starting in 2008, but the mapsa aren't exactly clear
