Torrent Question

As most of you probably know I'm crap at networking so bare with me .

I just downloaded UTorrent and installed it. It started coming up with various scary things involving forwarding ports.
I don't know what to do. I did everything it said but when I check it says the port isn't open . I'm using the windows firewall and I have cabled internet (no router). I even tried turning off the firewall. I basically get about 1kb/s download speed.

open utorrent and go to:
options>preferences>connection
note the port used for incoming connections.

go to start>run>cmd

type "ipconfig" and note the ip address and default gateway.

open up a browser window and type in this ip.
enter username and password, usually a combination of admin/admin or admin/*blank*

under port forwarding, forward the following port to your ip.
if your unsure how to do this:
www.portforward.com has the instructions

Or just enable uPnP in your router. Any recent one should support it.
If UTorrent doesnt support UPnP, download azureus. Generaly takes up more resources, but its very good at its job.

utorrent supports UPnP, isn't it usually enabled by default on new routers?

Try changing your default port to 65000 (random number) and make sure it's allowed in windows firewall;

I tried doing what steve said but I just get the "problem loading page" thing when I type in the ip.

As I said I don't have a router and I've temporarily turned my firewall off.

I dont think you need to forward ports if you are directly connected.

ok then try 27015 (the port that cs uses) who is going to play games and leave bit torrent running

Or forget Utorrent, i had millions of problems with it im now a happy Azureus user.

utorrent is fine and it uses minimal memory system memory

Something is closing the ports at some point. You must be using a router or firewall of some sort you haven't thought about.


What does the cable internet plug into?

It plugs into a box thingie that goes on the roof via an ethernet cable. I think its called an OSRAM something or other. The box communicates with something about 2 miles away in the nearest town. The actual ISP is a bit of a mess. I had it explained to me once, it uses loads of normal internet connections and the whole town is on mesh boxes (whatever they are).
