    it was 50 odd V when i last put a meter on one (about 11 years back) whilst illegally moving my BT box in rented accomodation (maybe).

    lol, ok, other than the possible argument about plus or minus voltages, line distances and the like I'll just say this... it bloody hurt! Like licking a 9V battery but much much worse... I even have a small blister under my chin!

    Could this be as I have had the gain turned up on the line to try and get the best broadband speed?

    Yes that sounds about right for the open loop voltage. It will drop to much less than that when the telephone is off-hook - the actual voltage will depend on the impedance of the telephone and the series impedance of the line.

    Yes - because you were exposd to the full open loop voltage (as above) on a wet (sensitive!) surface!

    No, the gain refers to the gain of the amplifier at the exchange that receives your broadand signal from your modem.
