Anyone have any experience with proper allergies?

Faye's just come back from a visit to the hospital, and they've found out she's allergic to cow's milk and eggs. Apart from goat's milk & soya, is there any other alternatives we can use (she loves her Readybrek before bed), and what do we do about eggs? We can't deny her cake for the rest of her natural after all....

is it all eggs or specifically chicken eggs. I have a mate who has a few ducks and he just eats duck eggs all the time, could maybe get away with that?

Re: Anyone have any experience with proper allergies?

How have you found that out? We discovered our 3 year old was allergic to eggs by feeding him one when he was starting to be weaned. We had to take him to hospital for intravenous antihistamines and steroids.

He's just had the scratch test, and it appears he's getting less allergic. We were advised thought that when they're very well cooked in cakes etc, the proteins change, so as long as we didn't go mental he was fine eating stuff.

Re: Anyone have any experience with proper allergies?

I'd want to go back to the hospital, or to the GP if possible, and get a much more specific diagnosis than that tbh.

It's not much use knowing that - you need to know whether it's all types, or just some, and if any cooking/preparation processes will change the situation at all.

Re: Anyone have any experience with proper allergies?

We used to have goats milk in the past in our household, I guess an adult can drink it no probs... But youngsters sometimes tend not to like it because, well how can I put it, It can smell a little "farmyardy", the smell really comes through in the goats milk I've had.

Unsweetened soya can be pretty good, the sweetened one (I think they do it with apple juice) can be a bit funny.

This is a long shot, but some of the best milk you can have is (water) buffalo milk, I know you can get it in this country, although I have not had it in this country.

She's been referred to a chest specialist at Alder Hey following several admissions for chest related illnesses, and they ran a spectrum of tests including blood tests for allergies. As far as I know, eggs are eggs and are all made of the same stuff whether they're game or fowl.... We are getting some more clarification though, just thought I'd ask and see if anyone had had a similar experience.

I read a book on the raw food movement (a load of crap) they make extensive use of nut milk which is Almonds blended with water.

Also I was just checking out these brownies this morning:

    From this book:
    · How To Cook For Food Allergies by Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne is published by Pan Macmillan at £16.99.

    Squidgy chocolate brownies (non-gluten, non-dairy)

    Makes 16

    110g dairy-free margarine

85g good-quality dark chocolate with 70% cocoa solids (check for traces of nuts or soya lecithin for nut and soya allergies)

    55g potato flour

    225g granulated sugar

    1tsp gluten-free baking powder

    ½tsp salt

    3 eggs

    Preheat oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

Line a 20cm square baking tin with baking parchment so the paper stands 2.5cm above the tin, and grease lightly with oil.

Melt the margarine and chocolate together over a gentle heat, stirring continuously.

Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large mixing bowl.

Beat the eggs into the chocolate mixture with a wooden spoon. Quickly stir in all the dry ingredients until the batter is smooth.

Pour the batter into the prepared tin and bake on the middle shelf for 20-30 minutes or until the centre just gives when pressed.

Remove from the oven and leave to set in the tin for 10 minutes before cutting into squares.

Re: Anyone have any experience with proper allergies?

Ok. Well as far as we know it's a milk thing. Don't know what it is specifically, but we've had her on soya milk for about 2 months now, and she's much, much happier. We've cut her off butter (using a soya spread), cheese (Goat's cheese didn't go so well) and eggs too - although she is ok with a little bit every now and again. We soon know if she's had too much as her digestion goes into meltdown and she gets a rash. So all in all, it's win, cos I get cake and she shares a little bit if she's good
