No wood needed - you want something with a bit of give for prolonged usage scenarios. These ones are great. You can retract/extend the end which helps protect it when you have to put it away. And they've got the lovely rubberised bobbly surface which is easy on the fingers and makes for a more pleasurable user experience.

So this thread inspired me to finally get that expensive pencil I saw a while back. It arrived today. Here you go - tools of the trade. And no wood in sight, just crisp accurate lines.

you press the end (and repeat as necessary) until the lead comes out the hole at the tip. It's much better than having to shave wood strips off a traditional pencil, and much quicker in exams. So long as you remember to fill it in the first place!

But if you don't, you're stuffed... whereas there are many ways to sharpen a pencil, including some that require skinning a cat... which suggests there are multiples of many ways to sharpen a pencil!!

even if they let you take the cat into the exam hall you're unlikely to have enough time to skin it, and it would probably get you thrown out for disturbing other candidates!
