There is something satisfying about a pencil, although I tend to use constant thickness draightsmans pencils.

I used to use 2B pencils for chart navigation though, easy to rub out, but needed constant sharpening

Hmm... I'm not sure theft is really the way forward.

I've got a pencil in my toolbox that I use sometimes when doing DIY. It's the same pencil I've had there since I bought my first house. It's still pretty long. Otherwise, I don't use pencils, and rarely use pens these days too.

My family swear by Zebra Cadoozle mechanical pencils. Shop around and you can pick up a 36 pack for a tenner, and they're a fantastic small mechanical pencil (eraser tipped for those inevitable rubbing out moments, too ). Slip easily into any bag/pocket/etc. and if the lead runs out (or you want a 2B pencil instead of the supplied HB) you can always refill them as they use standard 0.7mm leads...

With regards to pencil, I always found I wrote neater with pencil as opposed to pen...

The better I get at woodworking, the less I use pencils, as I mark most of my stuff with a marking knife... But at the same time I draw a lot more designs, sketch layouts and scribble notes, so I probably use pencils even more these days, overall.
In fact, I have five in sight/reach of me right now, including two mechanical ones and a blue pencil sharpened at both ends (in case ya snap one). Got several more in my admin pouch, too.
I have just one pen to hand, and it's a cheap Bic biro, at that!
