Motherboard Chipset Differences

PB5 doesn't support quad core..does it

The 680i supports unlinked overclocking which is a great feature for me...first time overclocker.

It's nice to know I can SLi my gfx card if I want to and that quad core is avaliable.

Swings and round abouts really.. You could buy a PB5 now until you want to buy a quad core cpu and get a quad core mobo at the same time.

Or get the 680i in any guise and be done with it. It might be that by the time you want a quad core that AMD have pulled their thumb out and made a better cpu than intel so it might be an idea to just get a stop gap mobo as well.

I chose the 975 P5W DH Deluxe over the 965 P5B Deluxe because I needed the extra IDE controller (ie 4 IDE device support) - the P5WDH Deluxe is the only board with at least 3 32bit PCI slots that supports 4 IDE devices. .....I also needed a parallel port but neither of these boards had that so have bought a PCI I/O card too.

Is the AB9 Quad GT a good buy?
I can't see why it wouldnt be and its also C2D and Quad compatible.
Couple this with the external SATA connectors and it seems very good.

Anything to the contrary would be appreciated.

( I dont like ASUS boards really. The ABITS seem much more user friendly and do just as much. I have owned a few ASUS boards but prefer ABITs)

So just to clarify a few things about the P965 and P975x.

The P965 is coupled with a newer southbridge...(ICH8 over the ICH7) - what does that bring to the table?

Apart from that they seem pretty similar, except in possible memory configurations.

You need to differentiate between the fact & marketing Hype Virtually all the 965 boards should be quad core capable eg see P5B Deluxe

- Intel® Core™2 Extreme / Core™2 Duo Ready
- Intel® Pentium® Extreme / Pentium® D /

The Quad GT is probably a good board but a lot of the hyped features are also found elswhere.

The best feature i can see atm is it won't be subject to the ASus QC lottery.

And that for me, is a very compelling argument right now, as I'm trying to decided between the Abit and Asus....
