E6400 Clock Speed Question

Hi fellas,
Just built a new rig:

E6400
Abit AW9D-Max Wifi
2 x 1gb PC6400 OCZ Platinum


In CPU-Z it reads:
Core Speed: 1632.3mhz
Multiplier: x6
Bus Speed: 272
Rated FSB: 1088.1

Now.....im not really sure whats happening here but should the Core Speed be reading 2.13ghz?


Please advise as i havent a clue whats happening now.

could it be intel step speed? underclocks at idle so its cooler..

Have no expeirence of cpu-z really.

Id run TAT and see what that says.

Yup, dead right.

It is to do with it idling, if you use some sort of program it should jump back up again.

But i've disabled SpeedStep and it's still going down to 6x and 8x.

Disabling it in the BIOS doesn't always work. You can use this program online, does some hack on it or something and completely disables it, thats what i had to do, ill try to find the link

Cheers for the replies fellas. I'll take a look at all the suggestions and see what happens

Just run something to load the CPU then check speed. If it's correct, and you have no pressing reason for speedstep to be off, leave it on.

i turned it off and its made no difference.

Does speedstep pretty much turn the E6400 into a "E4400" in the sense that it slows its clock speeds while idle?

I can't remember the specifics, but it should lower both the multiplier and the voltage of the chip in idle state. The transition from idle to full speed is so quick as to never really be a problem.
