If you really want the Thermalright cooler, why not just get it and then strip the board down, fit a couple of zalman passives on the NB and SB and a set of ramsinks to the mosfets?

    Just a thought

Good news - I emailed Thermalright and they have confirmed that the 120-Ultra eXtreme does fit the new Gigabyte P35-DS4 and P35-DQ6 boards. Excellent!!!

Certainly an option, and a good one at that

Clunk - what would you use to stick on the ram sinks?

For the last year or so, on my P5B, I used a set of Zalman blue ramsinks on the mosfets, they work perfectly, but you need to clean the mosfets first with some dry kitchen paper, or ideally some isopropyl alcohol, as the stock heatpipes come with thermal pads that leave an oily residue and this stops the ramsinks from sticking properly.

Lucky I used to be a chemist then - I have a Winchester (2.5L) of 98% IPA sitting in the garage for just such things

    You mean these chappies:

Do they come with some thermal adhesive?

I really just don't know which to get

From what I can see, the following boards are all basically the same...

P35-DS3P - has basic nb and sb coolers
P35-DS4 - has mosfet coolers and heatpipe system
P35-DQ6 - also has Crazy Cool backplate cooling plus 12 phase CPU supply.

I really want to go with the Thermalright Ultra-120 extreme. If it doesn't fit I could just remove the Gigabyte heatpipe coolers and install something like Thermalright NB cooler that's a lot slimmer. But at that point I may as well just go that route from the start and save some money on the cheaper P35-DS3P board as it looks basically the same board anyway.
It's very confusing to know what one to get, they all seem to have the same connections and p35 chipset, yet there's also qiute a difference in price between the 3? Might just edge my bets and go for the one in the middle.

    Hi Andy,

Yes, that was my initial thinking - why pay for the crazy cool backplate on the DQ6 that I'd probably have to remove anyway.

Also, for a Q6600 quad core and a modest overclock of say 9x333=3GHz, you're only actually OCing the processor itself, as the P35 can natively handle 1333fsb and 1067 memory. Therefore, as the motherboard itself is still running totally within spec you shouldn't need to pay for a premium "overclockers" product.

Your exactly right, think i'll go for the cheapest one with the large fancy heatsink.

£103.39 is a much nicer price to pay for a p35 board.

Yes, those are the ones, they do come with thermal tape on them, and I think you get 2 spare squares as well.

You can buy the tape off fleabay, its made by seksui.

    About Noctua

...but I'd really like to hear first hand from someone who's got one of these boards.

They are clearly aimed at Quad core overclockers, so it seems strange if the current crop of elite air coolers don't fit
I got a P35-DS4 + Noctua you've mentioned. I will just quote myself from another thread:
"There is only one sort of a problem I had/have - Der Cooler, Austrian Noctua NH-U12F bundled with one Noctua 12cm fan. I installed the cooler vertical (facing rear) and it touches the NB fins, a bit unpleasant for installation on CPU, it doesn't give a feedback on how tightened it is. And I can not install two fans in push-pull configuration, but only one fan (on the RAM sticks side). Did not try it horizontal. Too much hussle to take out the mobo".

One more thing - in order to have better temps with Noctua I had to actually use more ArcticSilver5 than it is recommended (I did try with less, "grain of rise", but the temps went actually up!).

Well, Noctua touches the fins of NB, but not too much, as I finally realised, so I just tightened it until you have the feeling that you start to be limited by the springs.

My temps E4300@2,8Ghz, Vcore1,25v, VDIMM-Auto=1,8v (while OCZ specs are 2,3v), Antec182Silver all 3 fans @low + one more similar fan @1000 in front and that Noctua U12F-one fan on the RAM side:

    1. Under TAT @ 100%, ran 50min:
    - TAT - 61C/61C;
    - Core Temp 0.95 - 62C/62C
    - SpeedFan 4.32 (Core0/Core1) - 47C/47C.
Btw latest CPU-Z shows that Vcore is 1,216v, latest speedfan 1,22v, latest CoreTemp 1,3250v.

With Orthos blend stress CPU and Ram for 1hrs10min:
    - TAT - 54C/54C;
    - Core Temp 0.95 - 56C/56C
    - SpeedFan 4.32 (Core0/Core1) - 42C/41C.
CPU-Z shows that Vcore is 1,2v, speedfan the same, while CoreTemp 1,3250v.
