    Quiet DVD Drive opinions

hello all - about to embark on a SFF build (See main thread in the main hardware forum) and after picking up the RAM and barebones, the next is to get a DVD drive. Thinking that this should be SATA (but it doesn have to be, just wanted to keep the IDE for an old drive) and was going to get this:

    Samsung SH-183SA

This seems to be a pretty quiet drive, although it seems to have problems writing -R media, which I happen to still have a load of discs of.

Can I just get some recomendations of others that appear to be silent in operation - of playing, I guess burning is always going to be noisy...

But any help would be great...

    JP

I think Plextor drives are known to be very quiet, but also very expensive...

You can also slow down any drive to make the disk spin slower, making it run quieter with software. I think AnyDVD can do this.

I'm sure that I read somewhere that this drive was incompatible with Drive Speed - Can the anyone with the drive verify about the -R problem?

But aside from that, are there any others that you would recommend?

Sorry about the reposts - but just had a thought... Do these SATA DVD drives need a special power connector? Or do they just use molex instead?

Well, ebuyer and Scan are out of them and I've been told that more stock may be hard to come by as its the end of an old line. So I've gone for the ASUS DRW1418 somwthing or other - most DVDRW are 20-25GBP so its quite difficult to know, at at cdfreaks - well, they get a bit too technical for me...

But this was a fairly recent model and is meant to be quiet, but if not then i can use drivespeed or something similar. Thanks for the help though... Kinda still like the Samy... but meh, whatever...
