Which RAM out of these options?

I am planning to buy a new system including the following components:
Asus P5K
E6600

However, I am unsure of which ram to get.
I want to start overclocking, but as this is my first proper system I wont be doing any crazy overclocks.
Also, I would prefer a well known reputable company fr my peace of mind just incase anything should go wrong.

Please could you recommend which 2gb (2x 1gb) ram I should get from the following options?

6400 RAM:

I have got a couple of ideas of what I think are the most suitable ram for the system, but am unsure so would just like to see what everybody else thinks

well when an e6600 is running 3.4GHz your RAM will be at its stock settings with pc6400.

Not many e6600's get passed 3.4GHz without a bit of good luck and a serious HSF so theres little point to the pc8500 unless your water cooling. Even if you were to get to 3.6GHz that would be such a light overclock to pc6400 it still wouldn't make sense to get pc8500.

i'd get crucial ballistx pc6400 if it were me.

If your looking to keep on a 1:1 with the ram then this stuff should do you fine as its rated upto 1066mhz.

These are the 3 RAMs that I had in mind. Ignore the price differences as they are hardly anything considering the total cost of my whole build and I dont mind paying the extra. They are all 6400 C4.

CellShock 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA804)

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HZ PC2-6400C4 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ)


1) Which would you recommend for my needs out of these 3?

2) I know the 'G.Skill HZ' and 'CellShock' memory use Micron D9 chips, which are supposed to be excellent overclockers. However, are the 'Crucial Ballistix 6400C4' chips Micron D9 aswell?

3) Has anybody ever heard of what CellShock's customer service are like? I know Curcual and G.Skill are very good, but CellShock are not that common and havnt heard of any RMA experiences with them...

Was just reading up on reviews and noticed that they are the D9 chips

So they seem to think that the G.Skill HZ sticks are the best in this price range.

Think I am going too go with the G.Skill sticks.

Have I made the right decision?
Anything that hasnt been mentioned that I should look into and reconsider?

Well, personally, I havent used the HZ G.Skills, but out of all the d9 ram Ive used, the Ballistix have been by far the best and gone, higher, with tighter timings at lower voltages.

ballistix. nothing else is really an option - good price, overclock very very well, well packaged, and i hear fantastic customer service.

Another vote for ballistix. If you want to overclock your RAM a lot, then I'd get the PC8500.... I have 4GB and it's fantastic. I believe the PC6400 is still good, but have no idea how high it goes. If you still want the GSkill though, it's a bit cheaper here:

Another vote for ballistix, don't forget you don't need to be thinking of running 1:1 i'm running very nicely @2:3 =1200 5,5,5,12 with 2.3v only 0.1 above stock voltage.

Wow seems to be lots of support for the ballistix, you have made me change my mind

I think the 6400C4 ballistix would be better for me than the 8500C5 because I dont think I am going to be doing any serious overclocks yet, just want to get used to it first

Is there any advantage of buying direct from Crucial?
Or is it just the same as buying them from any other online store?

It's a matter of choice you may save a few £ getting them elshere but imo by buying direct i have better options should things go wrong.

The 6400 are good to about 1066, with the 8500 going to 1200. Both will of course run at lower speeds with nice tight timings. You certainly won't lose either way.

Is there any advantage of buying direct from Crucial?

I'm going for my Crucial RAM direct from them as I can't find it on Scan, so if anything goes wrong with it I can deal directly with Crucial. Dealing with the manufacturer is often better than dealing with a random retailer for returns.
