OK, so that's sorted.
Now I just have the problem of the rear speakers.
Now, I can do as I did in the diagram at the begining of the thread using stands, but, although this is what I have seen as the most common, I have started to see examples like this:
(Just click 5.1) http://www.dolby.com/consumer/home_e...omlayout2.html
These show that the 'rear' speakers are in fact at about 90-110 degrees. Much less than what I thought it would be, I always thought that these speakers were actually well behind the user, at about 160-170 degrees.
EDIT: Also, if you look at the back of any DVD film cases, you can see the 5.1 layout as being advised to be the same as I thought before.

i cant comment from that angle as mine are sat behind me on the window ledge, before that i had them both mounted on the back of my chair, so i have always used the rears at 180 degrees,
but if i could i would set it up like you see on that flash pic, it wont make that much difference with them being close together in our case though.
Don't get too hung up on the angle for your rear speakers, it's not realy gonna make a massive difference, esp in a room your size.
Cinemas use a bank of speakers at the back and on the sides so in your situation to best emulate that sound I would put them at ear level or above in the opposite rear corners at an angle that would roughly point at your seated position.
