Surround sound setup OK?

I have purchased surround sound with my new system, and the space in which I will be using it is limited. Below is an image (top down) of how the speakers will be placed, this is the best I can do, I'm afraid. What do you think? Is the space a little to small for surround sound? I can still change the order.

most software for surround lets you tell it the distance to each speaker to overcome any issues

So having all 3 front speakers within 55cm of each other won't be a problem?

55cm is a very small space.

So I wouldn't lose any of the effect if I have all 3 speakers so close to each other? What about if I had all 3 at the same level (height)?

How on earth did you measure the exact angle the speakers where at?

its a great little invention called a wife and another called a tape measure, as for the angles, the speakers are not at any great angle, but u cant set 180 for the rears, so its 175
i set them as close as possible.
yeh she said i was bonkers but its sounds great, once you have the distances measured out and start to tell the CP where they are the sound field comes in on you and its sounds bloody great

height makes no odd's really

you can turn the volume up and down per speaker, so you can offset the fact there so close together.

55cm is very close, you'll defo loose some of the 'feeling' that 5.1 offers by having them like that.
They will work fine, don't get me wrong, but increasing the distance more will help keep the effect

I've just realised, can the front speakers be mounted with those keyhole mount thingys?

By having the speakers accross the front so close together you will get an effect, however the 'steering' of sound from say L to C to R in the instance of say a plane flying across the screen will sound quite narrow and not give much of a three dimensional soundscape.

HOWEVER we don't all have masses of space and you need to do what you can with that space, you don't mention what bits you have but I would imagine they are quite small speaker which is a good idea in a confined area. In terms of height you should TRY and have the tweeters of the speakers across the front at the same level as the treble is the most directional frequency, I always used to put the C on top of the tv and then L & R on stands/wall mounts at the same level.

I would not try and mount the speaker TO the tft, I would have a little shelf/bracket directly above or below - depending on what height of the screen is mounted, you want the speakers to be either approx at ear level or angled to that level.

BTW, I just went back, and if I wall mount the front speakers I can have 90cm between the left and right. What do you think?
