I just ordered one of those so wish me luck! The delays are obviously really annoying and the worst part of it, but for the value and the laptop you get I am prepared the wait. The GPU is the 512mb 8600GT but it's MXM-II which means I guess I can put in another one of that type of similar or less wattage in the future? The value is incredible along with the insurance-backed warranty, and if you email/phone them you can order an additional 9 cell battery for £35, or replace it with the laptop's £6 cell one for £15.

Also 3% student discount - doesn't sound like much but when the laptop is around £800 it's nice, lol.

The delivery is just cut frighteningly close to when I start Uni, that's all

hmm, that rizeon shop looks good. the santa rosa power pc one, well, couldn't look more dodgey, it might be fine but it really doesn't take ANY effort to make a nice website in the last, you know, 5 years. good price, but fails to mention detailed specs like which 8600 is uses, as theres a fairly big difference in performance.

rizeon, one thing i like is VERY nicely priced options, the cpu's are upgrade priced pretty much exact retail difference if you were buying the cpu, check dabs for the prices. the hard drives aren't cheap but way WAY cheaper than the upgrades compared to rock, 80gb 5400 up to 100gb 7200 is £33 on rizeon, £40 on alienware, and £79 on rock.

alienware, i always thought were insanely expensive but because its a name i remembered i went to check what current top end laptops had in them and was surprised by cost.

i think roughly spec/cost is better than pretty much all the rock range. the only rock one worth looking at is the £900 with the 8600, as really to get a 8600 you have to spend £1050ish at alienware, but its also got a higher overall spec, and if you add a few upgrades to drives/cpu then the alienware is higher spec + same price. the high end models, the 7950/7900 clearly pawns the 8600, lets be honest, 8800/2900's at the moment aren't showing great performance in dx10, so realistically a 8600's going to be dropping detail down anyway and not really taking advantage.

the only issue i see with the rizeon is screen size + resolution, i would really wanta 1680x1050 or a 1920x1200 which there isn't an option for otherwise i might well order it. don't really want to wait either

i get this disctinct feeling we won't see a nvidia or ati top end mobile part due to the fact that they didn't drop down to new manu methods, they use insanely more power than the last gen(both of them) and they just don't lend themselves to mobile use at all. though i'm completely happy to only game while plugged in as adaptor/psu's can use a lot more juice than the batt. the 7950 in the XPS's run at around 1/3 speed on battery, only full speed with the psu plugged in, according to anandtech anyway.

oh, and for the guys waiting on the model thats not due till september, isn't the lower model basically identical but only a 256mb version of the card? but, 512mb isn't going to make a difference at 1440x900 is it? i mean even at all. its not got the power to run such a higher level of textures + aa/af that it will need more than 256mb of mem.
