I wouldn't have though the extra vRAM would make much of a difference in DX9 gaming, especially at low resolutions, but for an extra tenner you can't go far wrong..

Apparently this has quite a quiet cooler as it only has to spin up to about 20% speed, and its the cheapest:

    Re: Advice on upgrading needed

Today Scan are doing a Gigabyte GA P35C-DS3R and a Q6600 G0 for £233, is that advisable? I have found out that the Powersupply is 380W, will that be enough?

I found this http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine , is a Quad counted as a dual processor on that list? If it is, it says the load will be 381W lol It doesn't have the G0 on the list though, so there's still hope.

    Re: Advice on upgrading needed

380w might be ok..it's difficult to say yes or no.. PSU calculators aren't very accurate and x1950's are a little hungry I think.

    Might be worth a try.

    Re: Advice on upgrading needed

380watt sounds about right, (I think), but I dont know much about the power requirements of quad cores.

However just to be on the safe side, I think you would be fine with any good quality psu above 400watts.

Scan don't have the X1950 in for at least another 2 weeks. I was thinking about a 7900GS XXX instead.

    Re: Advice on upgrading needed

The only sticking point with buying the whole system, motherboard, cpu, ram etc is that that graphics card is £94 at Scan and £68.75 at eBuyer. Does Scan do price matching? I don't see anywhere that you can contact specifically.

edit: Oh dear, the motherboard bundled with the Q6600 doesn't have Firewire, would there be much performance issues between the firewire being on the motherboard and on a cheap £5 card?

    Re: Advice on upgrading needed

not there shouldn't be any performance issues with that.

If you don't need RAID then I would get the IP-35E that will probably be cheaper than that gigabyte bundle and .. you won't be lumbered with a Gigabyte.

    Re: Advice on upgrading needed

It's actually £10 more expensive than the gigabyte bundle. The gigabyte bundle is £233 while the Quad + Abit IP-35E is £243.

    Re: Advice on upgrading needed

The x1950pro is great for dx9 however it's not dx10 (but when are we going to see dx10 only games?)
    Bioshock
in dx9 it well out performs both the 8600gt and HD2600xt (the HD2600xt beats the 8600gt)
in dx10 the 8600gt out performs the HD2600xt

The x1950pro has really been performing well in Bioshock.

PS at 1440x900 you'll not need 512mb a 256mb card will be fine and you'd be best off looking to other sites than scan as they seem to be really scaleing back on there dx9 cards atm.

    Re: Advice on upgrading needed

The perogative is a quiet graphics card so perhaps the cheapest x1950 Pro with a stock cooler and then some kind of aftermarket solution. Her current card has a zalman cooler on it and we don't want to make a new computer that's any louder than the current one.

I would have been very tempted with this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/produ...oductID=661335 if you hadn't said that the x1950 pro far outperforms it. I'd assume it takes a lot less power too.
