Worth Upgrading yet? Or wait for release of new processors?

I'm currently running a system thats nearly 3 years old. I bought an 8800gts a few months ago and this has improved things for games somewhat, but its showing its age and is quite sluggish when I try to do more than one thing at a time.

I want to upgrade within the next 3 months and was thinking of getting the Q6600 with an Asus P5KE motherboard and 2Gb of ram to bring things up to date.

My question is, do you think its worth getting this setup now, or waiting for the Penryn processors to be released in a few months time? I guess this could also bring aout price cuts in the existing ones too. Is it just the high end processors that are coming out (QX9650)? I dont want to spend £300+ on a processor when a £150 one will do fine.

This will be my first OC with an Intel system too, so need to bear that in mind.

    Thanks.

It depends on what you need pc for at the moment.if your computer will be still enough for your needs for the short term I would wait for the new processors come out. However if you really feel you need an upgrade I would do one now but get one of the Penryn compatible motherboards and get a quad core for the time being. I think that also according to what I read RAM prices may also start to rise but correct me if I am wrong in this respect.

I think 300+ is a bit optimistic for an extreme processor. More like 600+

If you arent in too much of a rush, hang on and see how the x38 board do over the next couple of weeks. There are rumours that x38 boards will be in the shops in the next week or so, but at the same time, the people spreading those rumours on forums, are retailers who are also horrifically price gouging as well.

So, my advice would be to have a look at what arrives in the next couple of weeks or so, and if nothing significant happens, stick with a G0 and a P35

Well you have to have a good reason why you want to upgrade, if you have the upgrade bug well..............
I have a nice new system now and still have my old computer and it is linked to the new.................guess what one I use the most? erm no! it's the old computer as I use the net also P2P (sometimes running non stop for days) a lot, so why have a super duper computer with fast graphic card just for that use.

Thanks guys. Well I dont desperately need to upgrade right this moment, but you know how it is, most of the fun is in the upgrading and tweaking.......

I think I will wait and see how the x38's roll out.
