gaming rig

What's better for a gaming rig, E6750 or Q6600? Knowing that I'm not very good at overclocking, I would like to know which one is better without being overclocked.

    Thanks.

    Re: gaming rig

I doubt its possible to really say. It probably depends on the games. The E6750 is faster, so will work better for games that demand pure power. And the Q6600 is a tad slower but has the extra cores which will probably make it faster in multi core optimised games. There are only about half a dozen of those at the moment I think, but if you happened to want to play one of those, then it would be worthwhile having. And in the future, there are going to be more like that.

Its also probably worth mentioning that some games aren't limited by my E6600. Crysis for example, doesn't push my CPU to its max, but it pushes my 8800GTX to its max. So with this graphics card (or a faster one), the Q6600 or E6750 will be pretty much identical, not only to each other, but to my ageing (kinda) E6600.

Also, if possible, if you could wait a few months, you could end up getting into the premier league with the new Quads. And even if you didn't get one of those, both the E6750 and the Q6600 will likely come down in price. So if you can wait, that will pay off in less than 4 months. Otherwise, just go ahead.

And after saying all that, if it was me, I would get the Q6600 Although, my motherboard isn't one of those new 1333 ones.

p.s. I don't think overclocking is that complicated by the way. There is a guide on this forum which is supposed to be really good, and it seems like everyone is doing it except me! (I overclocked my graphics card last weekend though).

I'm building my new PC with a E6750, but I'm getting a mobo which will support a quad core with penryn. In 12 months, when the new penryn cores are out, and the prices have stabalised, I'll get a quad.
I don't think that the current quads are that good, not much uses them, and they're about to be replaced by the next generation penryn cores. A good dual core is much better value for money, at the moment. Next week, next month, who knows?

Which one should I buy then, if I'm not gonna change my new PC for at least 1-2 years?

    Re: gaming rig

The main question I think becomes what do you do on your PC? In my case there was no question about getting the Quad Core as I will typically be playing a MMORPG, whilst listening to MP3's and sitting on IRC. It made more sense for me to get a processor that's better at multi-tasking.

If in your case you'll treat your PC more like a games console and just do one thing at a time, get the faster (and cheaper) E6750.

Heck no, " not much uses them" you mean not much use FOR them? For games the q6600 is the best! Old games run perfect, new games run equally good. Right now the q6600 is value for money, it will last you a very long time and even longer if you overclock it.

With the q6600 i can play all new games without out any slow down. Thats UT3, Crysis, Bioshock and every other new game, and gears of war. You want to concentrate on the GPU rather than the CPU to play high end games.

But in any case, the q6600 for an extra 50£ will last you a very long time and will run all current, old, and new games!

For games the q6600 is good and so for normal desktop use, definitely get the q6600.

    Re: gaming rig

which GPU are you looking for, how many HDDs will you have etc as that will affect how big your case has to be, same goes for the PSU, though either the corsair 520W or 620W should be good enough for what you need.

I'm going to buy 8800GT, and I'll have 1 or 2 HDDs and Q6600 I guess. Is corsair 450W enough? I'd like to know a good case too.

Cases are all down to personal preference and how much you are willing to spend, most offerings from Antec, Silverstone, Lian Li, Coolermaster to name but a few should see you right in the cooling department and range in price from £30 up

I was thinking about RAIDMAX Ninja 918 Silver, Nexus CATERPILLAR, Yasico 8989S or Antec SONATA III. Are these cases good at cooling? I like the last one the most but it has EarthWatts 500W power supply and I guess Corsair 450W is better... or am I wrong?

EDIT: One more question... is E6850 better than Q6600 (or than E6750)? Is E6850 worth the money over E6750?
EDIT2: Another question! Which RAM should I choose, Corsair 6400 C4 or A-Data Vitesta? Both are 2x 1024MB.
