Re: So, what are the odds on an exploding Hiper PSU fritzing the rest of my rig?

Cheers for the tips folks. I'm now looking at:
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 £158.57
    2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2 DHX, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800) £35.19
Antec 900 - Nine Hundred Ultimate Gamer Case with 200m Top Fan w/o PSU £67.79
    Abit IP-35 £75.78
    768MB BFG Technology 8800GTX, OC, £269.08
    500W Enermax Liberty Modular Series - ELT500AWT PSU £63.38
    Total score £683.86

Still a bit torn over the Q6600 versus E6850 and the GTX v GTS This seems to show that the E6850 is better for games, but I've seen other benchies suggesting that e.g. Supcom really benefits from quad-core.

The cheapest Scan GTS is £207.98, whereas the cheapest GTX they have in stock is £61.10 more. Perhaps I should split the difference and go for one of the overclocked GTS at £231.48

The GTS vs GTX has not much in it at the moment. Very similar performance/ price.
The only real difference appears at higher monitor sizes, where the GTX is better.
Reading the reviews will show more.

Right gang, thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated you all taking the time to share your expertise and opinions, with particular thanks to Dreaming for saving me from LOTS of aggravation.

Just pulled the trigger on the above listed combo plus one of those fancy-schmancy new SATA DVD drives for the princely sum of £16. Will let you know how I get on when it all arrives Tuesday....

Re: So, what are the odds on an exploding Hiper PSU fritzing the rest of my rig?

Well, after not only building my new PC but transplanting most of the bits out of the old one into my non-gaming PC, I can share the good news that everything was all A-OK. The Hiper may have died spectacularly but it did no damage.

On a side note I was shocked by how cheap and nasty the modular connectors on the Enermax were compared to the Hiper. They reminded me of all the bad features of Molex connectors, with misshapen misaligned pins that you need to faff and fiddle with to get them aligned.

When are we going to see Molexes joining IDE, parallel port and PS2 on the dustbin of history? Soon, I hope.
