    Question overclockers UK

I don't know about this site.. its appears to have the best deals on RAM, but you have to put all your bank card details in, just at the registration

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not too keen on that idea.

Anyone a member of them? How have you found it ordering from them?

Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way saying they are bad, or unsafe, just my first impressions!

I wish Scan sold OCZ Memory

    Re: overclockers UK

Why use OCZ memory? Not that it's bad but there's plenty of decent brands around.

OCUK are perfectly legitimate, most of us have used them at one time or another.

Most people don't like their RMA service (or lack there of) and in general their customer service (other than sales of course) leaves a lot to be desired.

Oh by the way, this is in the wrong section really it should be in the shopping section Shopping and retail therapy - HEXUS.community discussion forums

    Re: overclockers UK

Their customer service is atrocious, generally their prices are obscene for most things, but they do good sales and their memory is cheap.

Check out the links in the bargain forums for links to cheap RAM from other retailers.

They are a legitimate company, and I've used them a few times over the past 3 years or so, luckily never had to return anything so I've not had any problems.

I wasn't happy about giving my cc/debit card when just registering, but if you get a CC instead of a debit card, you have more protection.

Yeah they are real, but like Flewis said their customer service is shocking, if you want OCZ RAM though check out PLay.com I think you'll find they might be cheaper...maybe !

Customer Sevice has always been OK on sales, it's just returns that you have huge problems in making a contact. However, the real problem's are twofold:

    1. Opportunist pricing. They try very hard to get new or rare kit first and then hike up the price.

    2. They take money at order, rather than when they ship.

Welcome to the capitalist world. If you pay extra money in order to be the preferred retailer then you are justified in passing that on to your consumers - who if they want to pay a premium for early stock will do so, and won't if they don't want. Therefore if you can succeed at all then your actions must be backed by the consumer hence valid

    2. They take money at order, rather than when they ship.
SCAN are bad at this too - especially when something then goes out of stock or even end of line.

Wasn't there some fuss about racist/homophobic comments on their forums some time ago? I've never had any experience with them but the fact they are still in business for so long suggests they must do something right.

Yeah, but any mention of that here gets the threads locked as OcUK (allegedly, or perhaps apparently) employ some keen lawyers.

I actually found OcUK to be really good (including for RMAs) when I used them - but this was many years ago, "back in the day" so to speak when they served up high performance hardware at good prices, when the two original founders were at the helm. Since then, it appears to have all gone horribly wrong - mainly due to greed, it seems. Admittedly that's not based on my own experience, but there's no smoke without fire. I think the horror stories, the racism allegations (which go hand-in-hand with the forum where many people think Hitler was a little bit too left-wing), the leaks from their appalling admin/staff forum, internet hate clubs/spoof sites, allegations of selling returned stock as new, tales of shockingly rude returns/technical staff, many mentions of "trading standards" etc etc all speak for themselves, should there be any problems with your order.

    Still, they've got cheap RAM.

I'm pretty certain that some pay the extra money without realising that if they wait a few days the price will come down. Of course the rule is caveat emptor, but I was just saying that I don't like the practise, and I vote with my feet.

I don't like the practise whoever does it.

    Re: overclockers UK

Generally speaking, the choice of computer part supplier comes down to personal preference in the end People have had bad experiences with one of the four big companies (Scan, OcUK, Yoyotech, Ebuyer) and people have had good experiences as well with all of them.

Personally, I like using Scan because their sales staff are helpful and they've got a good customer service manager in ChrisP. Not to mention the fact they've got a customer service forum here makes it easy to complain or get information if you're busy.

    Re: overclockers UK

I've bought from Overclockers and never had a problem with any items so have not had to use the dreaded RMA process. They are generally more expensive than everyone else, but do occasionally have some good bargains in their "this week only" section which I think runs from Wednesday to Wednesday.

Imho Scan's poor range of ram is a shame because I'd rather buy from them as they have always been excellent with me. Not sure why they have such a small range.
