Is this of any use?

using a sky viewing card in "unauthorized" equipment is a violation of your contract with them, and grounds for them to terminate your access
you can only access free-to-air channels in a legit manner in the uk with dvb-s
sucks, doesn't it?
needing to put your viewing card in a "real" sky box every few weeks, and needing to buy an unauthorized CAM, is more than a little annoying
a tv card is pretty useless then for sky TV at least. whats the point in have a tv card that pause, record etc on standard tv channels?
how about if i had cable instead of sky. does cable such has virgin use a viewing card? or can i simply connect the cable at the back fo a tv card and boom cable TV on a HTPC
?
Cable is even more restrictive, mainly because the subscription numbers are lower so there is less of a 'knowlege base' of people getting it to work.
Subscription services in this country are a nightmare. In other countries where you actually have competition, they are quite a bit more open with regards to what equipment you can use.
The interesting thing is.. you still have to pay Sky even if you go the dodgy route. They don't, therefore, make a loss - it'd be an interesting civil case assuming Sky would ever be as daft as to try it.
exactly so why is it bad to use otehr equipment then theirs? its the same with broadband providers. they allow you to use otehr routers etc
From Sky's view? It's about control (they don't want people hacking their encryption) and support (they don't want people phoning them for help with variable hardware). Both add up to keeping revenue up, whilst keeping expenditure down.
In all honesty, those with media centers are a minority and most people are happy (or haven't seen the alternatives) with the Sky box in the front room.
Using a DVB-S card, CAM and viewing card, you can get access to services you wouldn't normally be able to without aditional cost. That is the problem
