Addressing 4GB in Vista 32bit

Have a system with specs in sig..

I was thinking of plopping 4GB to my system..

No issues with CentOS im sure, but my dual boot Vista would be the concern..

Anyone have experience addressing 4GB of mem in Vista 32bit?

Is there anything I need to do in terms of patches and such?

Patches? No. But you simply won't see all of it in 32bit Windows - maybe 3gb or so (depending on what other hardware you have sharing 32bits of addressing).
Vista 64 is the only way to use it all.

If you use Vista 32 with SP1, you will see 4096 displayed in system properties. However, this does not mean in any way the memory is being use any more efficiently than without SP2. It's exactly the same, except the memory is being reported to the user as being installed. The usage is still ~ 3.5GB.

I have tried using XP x64 and it has completely scared me off.. its in the middle of nowhere.. its not linux yet don't have the purpose of windows OS (i.e. gaming.. i know they're not but for work windows OS is bollocks..) at all..

As mentioned before - XP x64 was based on Windows Server 2003 and wasn't therefore the same OS as XP (32). Vista 64 is the same OS as the 32bit one and MS enforce 64bit driver development for Vista so support is just as good as for the 32bit incarnation of the OS. One could view Vista 32 as a cul de sac OS now that memory is so cheap. 64bit all good now buddy

I discovered my first downside to Vista x64 last night - the Nikon NEF codec isn't officially supported under x64, and Nikon look to have no intentions to do so any time soon.

That said, it still works...

Yes, there ARE still a few driver issues with Vista64. And DOS programs don't work either.

Got any particular examples of driver issues? As for DOS apps... it's faily well documented that anything requiring 16 bit subsystems won't work, though I can't really see why you can't run them in a virtual machine of sorts.
