    Vista x86 (32bit) VS. Vista x64 (64bit)

I have an Athlon 64, but i'm unsure which version of Vista to go for - 32bit or 64 bit?

Many people seem to be going for x86 even with 64 bit processors due to driver issues and software problems. But how much of an issue is it? will 64 bit run much faster on a 64 bit CPU? Is there much software that wont run on 64bit Vista?

I could do with a quick 101 if anyone has the time - what's the current situation and thinking on this subject? I have had my head buried in the sand for the last year when it comes to Vista, please enlighten me!

First off check your hardware has drivers, then go for it, you can always dual boot if you've got some awful old legacy stuff nocking about.

My 64bit Vista is fine now - the biggest problem i've had was with a X-FI because creative suck at drivers. I've found a workaround (i posted a howto thread) though and I believe you can find reasonable audigy drivers now too.

    Great guide that though.

    Ok, x64 it is then

Just a quick one - whats the deal with OEM then, ok to buy and install that then?

    In brief summary

OEM is sold with a machine and can only legally be installed on that machine. You do not get any support from MS - the idea is that the machine vendor provides the support.

    Others will doubtless elaborate!

So it's basically just support then? It ok to install otherwise?

Yep, you just can't transfer the license to another machine like you would be able to with the retail license.

Well...you're only meant to install oem on a "new" machine. So strictly speaking you can't use an oem version to install as an upgrade or re-install.

Its tied to specific hardware. The machine don't have to be new per-se (although you could argue most of the parts on the list would make it as such )
