    Wait for Nehalem...?

    Lo,

I've been planning to build a gaming Rig for 6 months and now Nehalem is so close I really don't want to re-buy expensive tech buy the end of the year.

What want to buy at the momentwhich is not Nehalem compatible -
    Motherboard: Abit IP-35 Pro
    CPU: Q450
RAM: DDR2 (Not sure if Nehalem will support this)
Cooler: Thermalright 120 ultra extreme ((Not sure if the attachment will be the same...)

    So, should I do...

    1) Scale down what I was going to buy to: Abit Dark Raider W/ Q6600 and a Scythe Mime and upgrade as soon as Nehalem comes

    or

    2) Buy the expensive stuff and just wait a year or too before upgrading to Nehalem

Also does anyone know whether current coolers will be compatible and about DDR 2 compatibility?

Many thanks to anyone who comments,
    FifthFreedom

You already have a decent machine, just buy more RAM and a better GPU to tide you over until Nehalem comes and see what you want to do then.

I was in a similar dilemma... Look at this thread:
    http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...l-nehalem.html
I would recommend either buy budget components or get some stuff second hand until nehalem comes along

    Re: Wait for Nehalem...?

Ahh right, well no, neither DDR2 nor current coolers will be compatible with Nehalem, the entire socket has been rearranged so the DDR3 memory pins can hook up with the onboard memory controller. So an upgrade to Nehalem will be a complete change in platform (aside from PCIe graphics cards).

May be cheaper but certainly not a budget spec.

I guarantee you would see no advantage from your 'High End' thoughts to the quote above.

    Re: Wait for Nehalem...?

Yeah I think your right man.

And I can buy cheaper RAM too.

    Then whack a Nehalem, a GT280 and 4 Gigs of DDR3 into my Antec 1200 and I have a kickass Uber-PC....

    Damn thats gonna be sweet...

If only the Nehalem came out sooner lol..

    EDIT:

    ANYBODY KNOW ABOUT THIS RAM?

    LN11596 ?

    Cheers...

    Re: Wait for Nehalem...?

Unless you're super rich and can get whatever extreme edition Nehalem chip comes out, just get the best you can afford now, and forget about Nehalem. You've been waiting for 6 months already - how long do you wait? You could carry on waiting for something new forever, and Nehalem is bound to have a premium on it for quite a while.
