    Re: Help Needed

Right well, ive strippedmy system right down to just motherboard and CPU, getting the same as before, seems like a dead mobo.

I also noticed while removing the motherboard the hole where the screw was stuck yesterday, the silver around the hole has been worn away, I'm now thinking its a dead motherboard...ffs

    Re: Help Needed

if you short the green wire to any of the black wires (ground) on the 20/24-pin PSU cable that will kick-start the PSU... you can check the faulty powerswitch using a multimeter and checking for resistance - should be 0 ohms when you press the button

    Re: Help Needed

Actually the original question is simple. I've had it happen to me before, just grab the standoff with a pair of pliers and unscrew. It's like a nut & screw.

As far as this is concerned I think you have to go back to basics, i.e. take it outside the case, out it on cardboard and have the absolute minimal configuration. If you have a Case Speaker just CPU/HSF and one stick of memory, otherwise you'll need to start with step 2, which is add a video card. Then you just keep adding a bit at a time.

If the original setup doesn't boot, then swap the memory. If that fails you have narrowed it down to PSU, mobo or CPU. And the only way to check those is by swapping.

Just seen the latest. Sounds like the mobo got fried.

    Re: Help Needed

Dont have a multimeter, im assuming the PSU is working because its giving the motherboard power/ light on but when am hitting the button, nothing is spinning up.

I am stumped as to what to do now. I could really do with some help in the pyshical, someone being here. I am however extremely annoyed because when I was removing a sata cable from the motherboard, one of the headers on the motherboard came off as well, so I might just spend on a new motherboard, but want to get down to what is causing the system not to power up when am pressing the damn power button.

This wasnt possible due to where the screw/ stand off was.

Thanks for the rest of advice.

As mentioned above, ive gone straight down to mobo, cpu and hsf, I got nothing from that what so ever. Not a bit.

    Re: Help Needed

I pop a screwdriver across the two mobo power pins and it should power on as if you've thrown a switch, the Psu could still be the issue here even if it is powering the mobo Led's - do you have a spare or anyone near who could loan you one ?

    Re: Help Needed

If you set your PSU up with as many fans and optical drives as you can plug into it, nothing else, no mobo etc.. PSU's dont like powering up with nothing to power.

Then with the back switch on the PSU off! put a paper clip between the green and black wires to short them on the motherboard connector (24pin one). Then turn on the back switch. the PSU should start as should all your fans.

If it doesnt and you have jumped it properly, you got a dead PSU.

here is some pics for reference:

    Cheers alex.

I will have a go at this asap and see if I can rule out the PSU. It might be later tonight or tomorrow before I am able to look at it. Thanks

That PSU wattage is plenty. After seeing its a corsair I'm doubting its the PSu now, but its still worth a shot jump starting it to eliminate that as the problem.

you wont hurt your self as long as you put the paper clip in while the PSU is switched off on the back. the amout of power going through the green wire is virtually nothing, is just enough of a trace so the PSU gets a signal to start.

    Re: Help Needed

I would a)Check that the lead from the case button to the motherboard is plugged in correctly (this stumped me previously) b)purchase a psu tester off ebay, only a couple of quid and will come in handy in future as well c)if PSU tests ok then send mobo back.

Also maybe look for any 'blown' capacitors on the motherboard?

    Re: Help Needed

Ok this is a pig and a half.

tested the PSU and fans were spinning quite happily. Am going to put it all back in the case again and see if I can get anything, if not, i need a way to test whether or not it is the case power button.

I have a little idea to try first to rule out if it is the motherboard or not
