    Gaming mouse recommendations

Hi there, I'm looking into getting a new mouse. Currently I have a cheap generic thing which is wireless and definitely is not up to the job of FPSing that I do a lot currently.

I've read around and seen the Razer Deathadder which seems to be a very good mouse but I am still unsure with the "3G" optical hype and whether this is the mouse I should decide to buy or if other mice are better. The Microsoft Habu also seems good but I've seen so many mice around it's hard to decide!

Personally I prefer a mouse that isnt too bulky for my hands as I have smallish palms. I've bought a Razer in the past but never a Logitech or any other make. I wouldn't know where to start except I've heard that Logitech do good mice. So what I am basically asking is what other mice are very good and not too expensive that I should consider?

    Thanks!

There's been 4 or 5 'gaming mouse' threads over the last 2 or 3 months, and I'm going to say the same thing as I had in the others. Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0.

Thanks I had a quick look on the Microsoft website and I am pleasantly surprised! I wasn't under the impression Microsoft would make a good mouse for gaming not aimed specifically at gamers but from this I can see I was proven wrong I've just always got that stigma attached that Microsoft wouldn't be so good on that front. What is this mouse like in terms of weight? Also I forgot to mention I'm more of a flicker when it comes to using a mouse would this cover that?

The Logitech g5 is also not a bad choice as well.

    Re: Gaming mouse recommendations

It's light(ish), and has a very smooth motion. The first one of these I got was back when optical mice first hit the market, paid £50 for it and it lasted me 4 years, I got a Logitech cordless desktop after that, a Logitech G5 after that, but I just wasn't as happy with either products as I was with my ole Intellimouse, thankfully Microsoft brought it back out, and it still works just as well as the first two models. I'm very happy with it.

And why does it work?... Well, it's a mouse, it doesn't pretend to be something it isn't, it doesn't need fancy drivers or software for all your buttons to map correctly in-game, in fact it doesn't need any drivers at all beyond the standard USB HID drivers that comes with practically every operating system out there. It just works, and works well.

    Re: Gaming mouse recommendations

shadowmaster - Thanks for the review the mouse has a lot of nice extras and features included but after thinking about it I realised I'm not too much a fan of that type of mouse it looks to be a bit bulky for me as is the Logitech G5.

aidanjt - Thanks for your insight I am now quite tempted to go for this mouse it is significantly cheaper than most others I would have looked at but I am still unsure about whether to go for the Razer Deathadder or the Microsoft Habu as other options. Main thing that seems to put me off from the Intelimouse is the DPI which I'm assuming would be at 400?

Logitech MX518 Great mouse, and great prices on it, had mine two years now and it's still living up to the pounding it gets

Yep, however some review sites say its 450 dpi. Either way I personally think its a bit on the low side for a gaming mouse, but there are also other important factors involved such as grip, response time, smoothness, etc, which also play a big part.

    Re: Gaming mouse recommendations

    Razer's are my personal favourites.

I use a diamondback 3G blue as it is good spec and the right feel/size
old diamondback is the same but less features
lachesis is too bulky at the rear but amazing!

I also tried a microsoft sidewinder, horrid things!
metal scroll wheel, akward placement of side buttons, horrible feel, bulky and big, dust collects easy in the laser.

    It's 4.98*

Thank you for all your feedback it is really helping me decide on a mouse. I am very particular with these things so I need to make sure I make a good choice.
Has anybody had any experience with the Deathadder or Habu?

I've had the deathadder and its a very good mouse, very smooth, responsive, and accurate, but I found the cyber snipa to be slightly better.

When it comes to choosing mice, its all really about personal preference.

Don't need anything over 200dpi anyway, it's nonsense marketing, the optical engine just needs to know there's a change in surface, and at 9000fps the optical engine is very sharp. All these 'gaming' mice are a con job that are no better than mainstream mice in practice.

I'm trying to see what you say but surely a low DPI would mean a mouse would appear jumpy and skip pixels when sensitivity is turned up? Or am I missing something here

No, at a low frame capture rate the mouse will skip and jump, if you look at a video clip on a 2" mp4 player you can still see it moving and make out how the image is moving exactly the same as if it were playing on your computer. Sure, it wouldn't look as good, but your brain can still perceive how the images are moving. The same principle applies to optical/laser mice. To sum it up, fast/intelligent optical engines are far more important than picture quality.

Okay now I see exactly what you mean and when I compared the Microsoft Habu to the IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 I saw what you mean as the frames per second are lower on this. So turning sensitivity up in effect means the mouse has to capture more frames per second therefore this is what matters in mouse precision, am I right in this?
